It all started with the word “Hi"

Creative companies in buildings facing other in Manhattan engaged in Post-It window art competition to impressive levels.

It seems that one bored creative person said "Hi" with Post-its on their window, which generated a "sup" reply across the street. Reciprocation and escalation occurred, to the point of tourist attraction.

In an industry where using cutting edge technology is the norm, it’s not lost on anyone that this creative arts war uses no technology at all.

😕
😠
😡

I beg to differ, sir.

The part about 3M throwing them cases of additional ammunition was pretty cool.

8-bit video games are the perfect subject for post-it art.

This is pretty cool. I'm thinking of sharing with my son who works in a digital creative industry in a historic area (narrow streets, buildings close together) of his city. I can see the same escalation happening there, too.

...uses no technology at all.

I agree with your dissent. There's also that re-positionable adhesive thing going on.

I'm reminded of a story told about 30 years ago by David Suzuki when he was still hosting the CBC Radio science show Quirks and Quarks. He said his team went to a supermarket in Edmonton in February (average temp there in Feb is -9C or 16°F), and as people left the store they were asked, "What role does science play in your life?" to which most people, the same folks carrying fresh strawberries and lettuce, in Edmonton in winter, said, "Not much. I was never good at math."

How the fsck is anyone in that hell-hole of an office supposed to get any work done?? Big long tables with computers on them, no offices, no doors? It's got to be sales, or some other extremely non-creative work being done there.

Do creative agencies have finals week? Because that's the kind of thing that kids sink obscene amounts of time into when they are avoiding studying for finals.

The network upfronts are this week, hmmm.

The elbow-to-elbow computers seem to be the new norm in smallish tech companies. It seems barbaric. Maybe just another manifestation of expecting employees to tolerate painful working conditions in exchange for the "reward" of being on a cutting edge.

You have this backwards. Sales people get offices because they need to make phone calls. Creative people need to not have offices so they can collaborate. If you don't like that I don't think you're a team player.

And people say there's no benefit to unpaid overtime!

Oh, if that were so.
If only that were so.

Oh man, I miss the old David Suzuki before he went way down the woo woo conspiracy rabbit hole to a place where he only really says ridiculous bullshit and got mean and xenophobic.

Angiep, is it Yaletown? From my window I can see a Yoda wielding a lightsaber, and a dancing baby Groot. There haven't been any new ones for a while, but I find them charming.

Hi Jon. Good guess! But he's in Gastown. And works in one of those "elbow-to-elbow computers" places.

Ahhh, it must have spread from there to here or here to there! Or more likely it's just what happens organically when you put nerds in buildings near each other with post-its...
