A new mapping technique, known as fodar, has finally settled the debate. At 8,975.1 feet (2,735.6 m), Mount Isto is the tallest peak in the U.S. Arctic

Fact: they were going to change its name to Mount Isnot if Mount Isto had proven not to be the tallest.

Was it not possible to come up with a better name for the technique than fodar?

I thought this headline meant the mountain was using a new technique. Way to go, mountain!

Note that fodar is not an acronym and is not capitalized, it is simply a convenient portmanteau of ‘foto’ and ‘lidar’, just as ‘lidar’ itself is not an acronym but a portmanteau of ‘light’ and ‘radar’. -- Fairbanks Fodar (Motto: If your topography is changing, we can measure it.)

So, it's a portmanteau of a portmanteau; the infamous portmanTwo.

the infamous portmanTwo.

The rollicking "Portman" sequal everyone's been waiting for! Coming to theaters this summer!

It's fodar for the media.

Why not “phodar”?

That fits the spelling of the original “photo”, and pho is a delicious Vietnamese dish.
