This is adorable and I love Kevin but it's also explicable. Sometimes to subdue feisty pray cats will smother them with their bodies, just scoop that lizard/bug/mouse right in and sit down on it. The strategy is that the prey will be shocked and freeze up and the cat can chomp it better, and the cat can use all the fur on its tummy to feel when and where the prey is moving and catch it as it tries to wiggle away. So Kevin here is playing "that ball is a very aggressive pokey snack and I must conquer it!!!!1!!!" and also the floor is smooth so he can't get the best grip as he scoots around. In conclusion, the cat equivalent of "yes, a tiny net is a death sentence" is actually their tummies.

I like the dog in the background pulling off a perfect Margaret Dumont: "Well, I never!"

The simplicity of the post's wording made me wonder, "Surely there's nothing new under the CATS ARE WEIRD sun, right?"

I stand corrected.

Ember will not tolerate acrylic cubes of any shape or size. They must be knocked to the floor and hidden. Even if she seems to be asleep she will wake up and ensure our acrylic cube safety.

In my house, it's referred to as bellying.

Bellying (verb): To belly a toy; i.e., to render a toy immobile with one's belly.

Used in a sentence: "Are you bellying that toy?" "Did you belly it?" "Belly that toy!"

Then, commence smoochy noises.

I had a kitty (RIP) who would do this specifically with the plastic curled strip that comes off of some gallon milk jugs.

Wow, that cat is like ... imitating a battery operated toy -- and the tennis ball is kind of the battery!

I’ve done the human equivalent of this to a quarter I dropped in public.
