Life inspires art inspires life: the anime

As the Japanese figure skating duo of Suzaki Miu and Kihara Ryuichi started their routine, some very recognisable music started playing...

An explanation:

Yamamoto Sayo is an anime director who directed Michiko & Hatchin, a crime caper comedy set in a not-quite Brazil, as well as Lupin the Third: The Woman Called Fujiko Mine, a spin off of the long running Lupin III series. She's also an ice skating fan and in 2015 she directed Endless Night for the experimental anime series Nihon Animator Mihonichi as a celebration of the sport.

Then came Yuri on Ice, a twelve episode anime series that became incredibly popular with not just anime viewers, but also ice skaters, with several professional figure skaters praising the series.

So perhaps it's not surprising to see actual figure skaters skating at the Olympics to the same music as Yuri on Ice's protagonist.

Yuri on Ice was a pleasantly different anime, and deserves the accolades it has received. I figure it's only natural that it worked its way into the Olympics.

Sayo Yamamoto also directed the opening for Persona 5, so I can cross my fingers that some team skates to a Lyn Inaizumi song later.

I admit that given the skaters' nationality I was hoping for Tank! or Uchuu Senkan Yamato...

There were a lot of twitter comments about 'omg NBC sports commentators had to talk about anime', apparently not realizing that the sports commentators in question included Johnny Weir, and it's really, really not hard to get him to talk about Yuri on Ice.

(Johnny Weir and Tara Lipinski were delightful commentators and I am now super tempted to watch all of the ice skating I can for their bedazzled headsets)

Does anyone that has watched the anime know if some of the moves they did match with what's in the anime beyond the typical moves that are prevalent in figure skating and would also be in the anime?
