I have to admit I love this. Say what you want about Apple, but they do know how to sell things.

Choreography by Ryan Heffington, who also did Sia's Chandelier. And a bunch of other great stuff.

but they do know how to sell things.

I always love to buy products based on commercials that basically show me almost nothing about what said products actually do. I mean it's a great video, but it's more of a music video than an ad. I have no desire to buy anything based on it.

I mean, they've been pretty great at selling dongles lately, so there's that.

I'd kind of not bothered watching this since, you know, it's a commercial (even though I'm generally fond of Apple's products), but I heard enough people raving about how good it was, and now I see why: it is less "commercial" and more "beautifully choreographed dance video with a bit of branding at the beginning and end."

Really quite enjoyed it!

From what I’ve heard about the heavy bass on these things, I kept thinking her landlord was going to kick her out due to complaints from her neighbors.

Watching on my phone. As soon as she said “Hey, Siri...,” it stopped playing and Siri stared up.

Um... Can Siri really not tell when the phone call is coming from inside the house?

The movement of the sets reminded me the tiniest bit of the old(!) Jamiroquai video for "Virtual Insanity", but in a good way, like with added color and oomph! and no silly hats. I like Anderson .Paak's song, too. I suppose it's available (legally) only on Apple Music...?

Apple's angle on HomePod has been about how great the sound quality is. The ad made sense to me.

I'm embarrassed to say I find these Spike Jonze ads (and/or short films) inexplicably moving. The perfume ad linked in the original post gets me too.

One particular thing about this one is that it flirts with my lifelong desire to be able to press on my bedroom wall and escape into another dimension. I'm pretty old and I still press on a wall every now and then just to be sure.

Which one of them stays behind in the mirror world? I may be reading too much into it, but I think it's the reflection at the end, checking out her new apartment and thinking about how she's not going to waste her time in the real world like the original did. I mean, like I said I want a bedroom portal to another dimension, but on the off chance someone with the power to make that happen is reading this, I do *not* want a double of myself to erase my face and assume my identity, obviously.

I wasn't aware of her before, but the dancer in the ad is FKA twigs, who (I'm discovering this evening) has several albums with a Bjork-like vibe, which I mean as high praise.

I saw it sitting on the wood and immediately thought that it was going to leave a mark on her nice furniture.

How??? What about the ad says anything about the sound quality? What if I watched the ad on a tiny screen with horribly tinny speakers? How would I know it had great sound?? This ad told me fuck-nothing about the "sound" of it.

A new ad for something or other

Apple is... uh, now selling high-quality hallucinogens?

And now we know one of the reasons Apple kit costs at least half-again as much as anything else.

Google Home Max: $399
Apple HomePod: $349

Boy does that ad capture how I felt as a physically-small, young woman living in New York. The commute to midtown, with the crowds and rain and dark, and the recurring dreams I had in which I discovered secret rooms in my apartment that I'd never noticed before (which is supposedly a recurring dream that people living in NYC have more often than people who live elsewhere).

I've actually heard someone speculate about the style of the commercial, where, since you can't really demonstrate audio quality through TV speakers, they could very well use the idea of "expanding rooms" as a throughline in multiple ads, akin to the iPod Silhouettes. Could be a neat gimmick.

> valkane:
"Google Home Max: $399
Apple HomePod: $349"

Apple Watch: $329.
LG Android Wear: $199.

And? We can do this all day long. I really don't think anyone here, even the Apple fans, will argue Apple kit isn't expensive.

And I shan't even mention that every review of the HomePod says pretty much it is completely useless outside of the Apple ecosystem.

And I will mention the fact that all this stuff is expensive, but your statement that apple products are “at least half-again” is a false statement.
posted by valkane at 6:49 PM on March 9, 2018 [1 favorite]

And you can preach at me after you've thrown perfectly good money down the Apple hole and ended up with two very sexy, but functionally useless, doorstops/paperweights.

Hi, I've owned and used Apple products since the Mac Plus. (I also had a clone back during the brief period that was possible.) Does that give me enough credibility to have an opinion about prices and quality?

I love Apple products for the most part, but even I will say that $350 for
a non-stereo speaker
(stereo-capability is coming “soon”, and hey, it will only cost you another $350 to experience it!)
that only supports Apple Music
(no Spotify support?! You can stream Spotify via Airplay, if you don’t mind a 2-second delay for any and all commands),
has an even less capable version of the already back-of-the-pack Siri assistant,
and they didn’t even test it long enough to discover the ring-leaving foot material?
... I mean, come on.

At least it’s not another solid-gold Apple Watch made just for the 1%, but c’mon Apple—stop wasting time on expensive TouchBars that no one wants, repair your defective “dust will kill me” laptop keyboards and do better.

I’m pretty sure this advertisement isn’t aimed at your particular demographic. I could explain, but like apple, I really don’t see the point in wasting time on trying to convince someone who is more engineer than artist as to why asthetics are important.

Just know you don’t have to get angry and talk about fellating corporations; you can use whatever technology you choose.

you know you people don’t have to come into every thread even tangentially related to apple (who aren’t even mentioned in the fpp) and remind us all how much they suck ass? you’re not going to change anybody’s mind and you make people feel shitty for liking the things they like, just so you can collect a half dozen favorites from people who already agree with you.
