Patrick Leahy, senior senator from Vermont, is a serious Batman fan.

The anti-landmine comic book mentioned in the story is Batman: Death of Innocents, for which Leahy wrote the preface.

It's weird to think that the senior Democrat in the United States Senate is a year younger than Batman.

I suppose it's probably some sort of error that IMDB also says he was a gaffer on the Australian short "Snapshot" in 2011, but I'd like to imagine it's true.

"But I believe in democracy and I have so much faith in the American people in the end, we will elect the right person."

I wonder how he feels about this now. On one hand, the people did vote against the rapist. On the other, our election system is fundamentally flawed, corrupt, and to top it off we had foreign governments interfering. The real stinger is there is still a non-zero amount of Americans who did vote for him.

Halloween Jack: "Leahy's IMDB page."

He was even in the animated series. Awesome.

Hey, I did some work for that library he donates the proceeds to! My boss was proud to tell me about this.

Leahy's not without flaws, but he's solid blue, and at this point his cameos have to be a lot less depressing than Stan Lee's.

Yep, he's my guy. And at some point in the near future she should retire before he gets on the wrong side of too many things. For now, it's good to have him around. He supports the hell out of libraries, has staffers who are responsive to constituent concerns and, as these things go, is fundamentally decent. It's well known around here that he is also a Deadhead and strikingly tall.

On the other, our election system is fundamentally flawed, corrupt, and to top it off we had foreign governments interfering.

Sure. Deciding to participate in the democratic process is inevitably disappointing for people. Some people decide to work within it. Some people decide to work not within it. Some people give up. There are all sorts of good reasons to do any of those three things.

I'm an anarchist who has been working to get out the vote. It's a super weird time in America. I've lived in places with other forms of government that were worse. I've visited places with other forms of government that were better. We're at a low time for our form of government, in terms of upholding the ideals that the country was founded on, against scoundrels and tyrants. Working in an elected office can be, has to be, a long game.

Someone once said that America will always do the right thing in the end - but only after exhausting every other possible option.

So what you're saying is, you either retire a hero or you serve long enough to see yourself become the villain?

I'll show myself out

I have a 60s vintage batman mug (this one) that I call my "Leahy Mug" because it was originally purchased by a friend's mother as a gift for Leahy when she worked for him years ago. She decided not to to give it to him, and later my pal snagged it for me as the next biggest batman fan around.

That's my Leahy Batman story.
