I wanted the news to stand alone but I do recommend reading this tribute from his co-star on The Wire, Wendell Pierce:
The depth of my love for this brother, can only be matched by the depth of my pain learning of his loss. A immensely talented man with the ability to give voice to the human condition portraying the lives of those whose humanity is seldom elevated until he sings their truth.

If you don’t know, you better ask somebody. His name was Michael K. Williams. He shared with me his secret fears then stepped out into his acting with true courage, acting in the face of fear, not in the absence of it. It took me years to learn what Michael had in abundance.

He was proud of the artist he had become, asking for my advice long after he had surpassed any incite I could have shared. Always truthful, never inauthentic. The kindest of persons. Like two mischievous kids, we would laugh & joke whenever we would meet. Like Baltimore years ago

THE WIRE brought us together and immortalized Omar & Bunk in that “scene” on a park bench. But for us we aimed to take that moment in time together and say something about Black men. Our struggle with ourselves, internally, and each other. For me & Mike we had nothing but respect

So to you, my brother Mike, there is a small comfort that I know, you knew how much we loved you.

“There is a certain immortality involved in theater, not created by monuments and books, but through the knowledge an actor keeps to his dying day that on a certain afternoon, in an empty and dusty theater, he cast the shadow of a being that was not himself…….

“but the distillation of all that he had ever observed; all the unsingable heart song the ordinary man may feel but never utter, he gave voice to. And by that somehow joins the ages.

Mike…….you joined the ages.

Farewell my friend,
Love Wendell

A couple more videos to show the range he had:

Performing at the tribute to DMX in June (from 2:00).

A powerful scene from Lovecraft Country of Tic discovering his father is gay.

I think it really said something significant to a lot of queer black men that he wasn't afraid of playing these gay roles with as much tenderness and care as he showed everything else. Montrose and Omar were understated with their sexuality but it's meaningful and Michael put a lot of thought into that. The scene in The Wire where Omar's sitting out cuddling with his boyfriend and stroking his hair aired when a lot of shows were still afraid to show gay couples, let alone gay couples having normal everyday moments where their sexuality wasn't a problem to anyone, let alone black gay couples doing that. Michael wasn't afraid of those moments and it meant a lot.

Of all of the deaths I've woken up to in the last couple of years, this one hits a little harder than most. Goddammit. Looking through his career, I realize there is so much more of his work to see, so much I didn't know he was in. I'll have to work on that, but damn, I'm going to miss him.

I watched this earlier on youtube, Williams going over the roles he played. It's pretty short, and there's a lot I'd like to hear more about, but you can see the thought he put into his characters, and what each one of them meant.

Jesus. This is a real loss. He was a truly fine actor, I knew if I saw his name in the credits I was in for a great performance. It took a lot to stand out in The Wire as one of the best actors and most engaging characters, but he did it.

He seems to have also been great to work with. I’m very sorry for his friends and family to lose him so young and so suddenly.

This feels very 27 Club to me (2x27=54 hey). For years I've had a running curiosity about how his career was going to play out and how typecast he was going to be after The Wire. Even though that ended 15 years ago and Boardwalk half that, I feel like for the most part he's gonna land in the preserved-in-amber box. Regardless if he turned out to only be able to play Omar 80x over, I was looking forward to having him around for a long time. He was supposed to be around for when they pull a "Doogie Kamealoha" on The Wire in 20 years.

What choice is left for a man, especially a Black man, in a world that has no room for his softness, his femininity, his frailties, his elegance or his grace; for the myriad of ways in which he might show up in the world that fits inside no one’s boxes, nor the contours of anyone else’s expectations except his own? ... [Yet] you were trying to imagine your way out of the coffin they designed specifically for you from the moment of your conception and before.

This is so damned sad. Ugh, what a punch in the gut to hear this news.

Literally yesterday I put Motherless Brooklyn on our movie to-watch list. “Hey!” I said to my partner. “Omar is in this! It’s gonna be good just from having him in it if nothing else.” We spent a little time talking about how good he was in The Wire.

The thing I remember most about him aside from his enormous talent as an actor is reading about how much he gave back to his community:

Giving back to the community plays an important role in Williams' off-camera life. He is working to launch Making Kids Win, a charitable organization whose primary objective is to build community centers in urban neighborhoods that are in need of safe spaces for children to learn and play. Williams currently serves as the ACLUs ambassador of Smart Justice. Williams also served as the investigative journalist and Executive Producer for Black Market, a documentary program that exposes and comments on illegal markets throughout the world with a focus on the people involved and connecting with them on a human level. Black Market is a flagship show for the newly launched network from Vice. Vice returns this Spring exclusively on HBO. In an extended special season premiere, Williams takes a personal journey to expose the root of the American mass incarceration crisis: the juvenile justice system.

I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that Mr. Williams died, not of a heroin overdose, but of fentanyl poisoning. These will only become more numerous as the Taliban crack down on opium production in Afghanistan.

Perhaps if Mr. Williams had lived in Vancouver, he would have availed himself of free heroin of known quantity and purity, handed out by activists for International Overdose Awareness Day last week, and we wouldn't be here talking about this tragedy.

I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that Mr. Williams died, not of a heroin overdose, but of fentanyl poisoning.

Fentanyl-laced cocaine has been causing a lot of deaths via inadvertent overdoses around New York
and elsewhere. Lives claimed include the comic Fuquan Johnson.

Whatever the cause, this news makes me so sad.

I also felt this more than I have other celebrity deaths, even ones that came too soon. I've only maybe been hit so hard by Chadwick Bozeman, and that was in part because I am the white mother of a Black son who not only really loved Bozeman, but for whom Black Panther was an igniter of his awareness of and embrace of his Black identity.

My community of people lost a 21-year-old to an accidental dose in April, and that makes every accidental overdose hit me that much harder, I think. It's a particular kind of shock and pain.

Let's legalize some fucking drugs so that when people are using drugs—as they do—they can trust that they're getting what they expect to get.

I missed a lot of Williams' performances since The Wire simply because I don't watch a ton of TV. Seems like it would be a good project to work my way through some of them.

That "Typecast" video was poignant. The moment when he says that Yes, he does think he could play a President.

The especially poignant part of this clip is that he mentions being inspired to become an actor by Boyz N the Hood, directed by John Singleton, who himself died in his early 50s of a chronic condition (hypertension leading to a stroke). This is not a coincidence.

Last night, the algorithm happened to suggest this clip of Idris Elba on Graham Norton, talking about meeting the Obamas. There's a photo of him laughing with Barack, and Elba said that he was laughing because Obama told him he was his second favourite character on The Wire. Which is just such a tribute to Michael K Williams in a way; a show with so many fascinating characters, so many great actors, and there's no shade in saying you came in second. Everybody knows that Omar was the best -- you don't even need to say it.
