I love this guy's sound a lot. While I was watching one of the bass(?) sax bits and musing to myself that he had found a way to make the sax a percussion instrument, I noticed a microphone on one of the (keys? pads?). It also looks like he's wearing a throat microphone, I guess so he can pick up more of that cool "singing into the instrument" sound I dig so much.

Oh awesome, I love Colin Stetson and his Adult Swim set from last year was excellent!

And yes, he and his instrument have several microphones to pick up sounds from inside the instrument and vocalisation. The first time I saw him was live and I was blown away that one person could produce so many layers of sound with just a single instrument. It also looks like hard work.

I first heard Colin Stetson doing the soundtrack for The First (horribly named Sean Penn space show, which I loved). It was mindblowing, like hearing Peter Gabriel and suddenly getting it for the first time. It’s as if the heavens are opening and you’re getting the barest glimpse of the Grand Glory of Everything and it’s just for you and you alone.

He’s just that good.

I saw him play Hopscotch Festival about five years ago. His set was only 30 minutes, but if he did another song, I'm not sure he would've survived. I'd never seen anybody so physically wrung out after playing a set.

He does a lot of film scores. They used a track of his called "Reborn" from the Hereditary soundtrack in the Bourdain documentary, and the sound of the lead synth was just so jaw-dropping that I had to look it up afterwards. Love his stuff. Also, respect for his circular breathing!

He also did an excellent reimagining of Henryk Gorecki's Third Symphony (see also the version that Beth Gibbons did with the Polish National Radio Symphony).

(Though my favorite 3-saxophones-in-one person is Rahsaan Roland Kirk.)

What's most astounding is his supernatural breath control. Almost as astounding is him getting this sound without using a Strymon BigSky or Boss RC-600 looper. The story of his saxophone professor at college bursting into the practice room shouting, "How are you doing that!?" is exactly how I feel too.

Yeah, it seems he's been putting most of his energies over the last few years into film soundtracks. Would love to hear a new non-soundtrack album as he's one of my favorite artists, but I'll take what I can get! Totally transporting.

His bandcamp for those interested in more.

Yep. And a few mics and a bit of fairly subtle reverb is all the processing that the sound gets. The rest is all him.

His live sets are the best. Truly electrifying performances.

> None. None more New York.

Except that iirc he grew up in Michigan and lives in Montreal.

I haven't watched this video yet but the first time I ever saw Colin Stetson perform the hairs on the back of my neck stood up. Amazing.

Saw him at the first Eaux Claire Festival (which was amazing) and was blown away by his live performance. It was an incredible, and hot as hell, weekend.

Got to see him live a few years ago. Just amazing.

I might cite two interesting antecedents for Stetson's work, which you may or may not be familiar with:

1- Rahaasan Roland Kirk (incredible multi-instrumentalist; clip from a live performance in 1972)

2- Ben Neill (demoing what he calls 'mutant trumpet'; if you've listened to early Jon Hassell recordings, you've heard Neill playing this.)

Loved his set for Adult Swim last year, and love this one too. The slower tempo version of Judges here is so great.

I'm perpetually astonished by how visceral his music is, and how very much it lives in the body, both his and the listener's. When his music hits, it really hits, deep in the lungs and gut. Truly, there are few more cathartic listens than his track Hunted.

I'll also link one of my own Colin Stetson previouslies here as well and recommend that if you like Stetson's solo work, give his experimental metal band Ex Eye a try.

Dang, the video's been made private before I got a chance to see it... :(

It should be back up on Colin Stetson's own channel shortly, that's what happened with last year's Adult Swim set.

Here's the set again, re-uploaded onto his own channel, yeah.
