The Hollywood Reporter Roundtables

This years THR Roundtable discussions have been trickling out for a bit now. They're all pretty good discussions, IMO. Also -- they're sitting together talking! It's like from the Before Times! In no particular order: Directors Roundtable (Kenneth Branagh, Jane Campion, Guillermo del Toro, Asghas Farhadi, Reinaldo Marcus Gree, and Pedro Almodóvar) [51m]
Writers Roundtable (Maggie Gyllenhaal, David Chase, Jeymes Samuel, Sian Heder, and Zach Baylin) [54m]
Actors Roundtable (Andrew Garfield, Jonathan Majors, Peter Dinklage, Nicholas Cage, and Simon Rex) [53m]
Actress Roundtable (Kristen Stewart, Tessa Thompson, Jennifer Hudson, Jessica Chastain, Kirsten Dunst, and Emilia Jones) [50m]
Documentary Roundtable (Questlove, Todd Haynes, Liz Garbus, Jimmy Chin, Robert Greene, Jonas Poher Rasmussen, and Betsy West) [53m]
Songwriters Roundtable (Kid Cudi, Camila Cabello, Anderson .Paak, and Sparks) [50m]

I'm definitely interested in hearing these folks chat together, but I can't help but ask myself a question.
Why do they segregate the actors by gender, but not the other groups? Maybe they couldn't find enough female directors, writers, documentarians , or songwriters to populate a whole other table with any of those?
Though I'd rather see just one table for each topic with a balanced group. I mean why don't we get to hear Kirsten Dunst talk with Nick Cage or Kristen Stewart with Peter Dinklage?
I'm sure there'll be some great stuff in these roundtables, but this kind of thing is a reminder of how far we still have not come.

I'm pretty sure that is a reflection of the Academy and how it splits its awards.
I think on some level, it's to be celebrated -- we get a slate of men and a slate of women, and that's a lot of people in conversation saying interesting things. If there were a single slate, would it be all those people together, or would it be half as many, leaving a lot out?
On another level, yes. It feels segregating and uneven-playing-field to have the men and women separated like this. Given the patriarchy, would there even be any women on the slate if it weren't divided? I am sure I'm not alone in thinking the single slate would leave out many, as if even the nomination process as it stands doesn't leave out many-times-many.
I was glad to see women and POC on all the panels that weren't specifically gendered. That felt like progress, certainly.

Also, I'll note -- these roundtables are not of Oscar nominees. They were all filmed before today. But they are all pretty good conversations, better than other roundtables in the past I think.

There's another similar "people talking shop" longform video series that actually does this - Variety does "Actors on Actors," where it pairs two actors up for an hour-long conversation.
Those can get genderblind, but sometimes can get a little weird - there's one with Shia LaBeouf and Kristin Stewart in particular, where Kristin urged Shia to look into art therapy. That or pottery. There's also one with Emma Stone and Timothee Chalamet, which was a follow-up to another conversation he'd had with Daniel Kaluuya when they were both just starting to blow up and spent most of the conversation freaking out over their respective sudden fame ("Dude, you were great in GET OUT!" "Dude, YOU were great in CALL ME BY YOUR NAME!" "Is this all weird for you?" "Yeah, kinda?")
They've announced this coming season's lineup, and among the matchings are Andrew Garfield with Rachel Zegler, Jessica Chastain with Rita Moreno, Penelope Cruz and Benedict Cumberbatch, Marlee Matlin and Bradley Whitford and Jamie Dornan with Kirsten Dunst.

There's also Dinner for Five, Jon Favreau gathering all sorts of Hollywood folks in groups of five for conversation. 3 seasons worth on Youtube, really from the before time.
