What Counts as Seeing

Activist Alice Wong and science journalist Ed Yong talk about the diversity of the natural world, the incredible senses of other organisms and the limits of our understanding for how rich and diverse the natural world really is, ableism in science, the strangeness and unpredictability of sensory biology, and more in Orion magazine following the release of Ed’s latest book, An Immense World. This made me realize / remember I have Yong’s first book on my shelf, and made me excited to start reading it. Thanks!

Such a great conversation about everything from communicating electrically to tasting chocolate with your butt. Ed is an amazing essayist, and Alice is one of the most thoughtful people on the internet. They also are two of the planet's best advocates for vulnerable people during the still ongoing (no matter what you've heard!) pandemic.

This is a really wonderful interview between two people I already admire.

Well, that was just wonderful.

I thoroughly enjoyed their conversation - and in a conversation about noticing and sensing, I especially enjoyed the things she had noticed in his writing and chose to ask him about.

I was unfamiliar with both Wong and Yong before reading this, but I am very glad indeed to know about them now. I'm so glad to know they have both written lots - I'll have a chance to look for their many shorter works, along with Yong's books.

I am most grateful to you for sharing this here, ellieBOA! Thank you!
