Cardigans are cool!

The Ripper, by The Volcanics. I love a surf guitar instrumental, especially when it's accompanied by a video as effortlessly stylish as this one. Maybe you'll enjoy it too.

It has never occurred to me that one could line dance to surf music. Brb texting my only-country-music-allowed bestie about this revelation

Nice tune, although I found the squelchy-sounding guitar effect a little distracting. I rather like surf guitar instrumentals, and will be adding this to my ever-growing playlist.

Is this the thread where we post our current surf favorites?

Is it wrong of me to imagined that a track called “The Ripper” would be some kind of misogynistic murder scheme?

worst possible interpretation of something that is an instrumental and in no other way hints at that possibility.

This is the same label that The Surfragettes are on. Here’s their instrumental of Toxic.

In surf lingo, a Ripper is an exceptionally talented surfer. Given the context, I think that's the more natural interpretation.

GenjiandProust, I hadn't heard of "surf rock" or the Volcanics and had the same initial reaction, so if you're wrong you're not the only one. Today I explained my vocab and enjoyed some groovy new music and video. A good day on metafilter.

I mean, maybe we all do a book about murderous pro surfers? Call it Crime Wave? No?

Either way, I really enjoyed this -- fantastic song, loved every bit of the elegant camaraderie in that bar, great start to my morning! Thanks for finding this!

Well here's some more artists and songs to experience the genre.

Since we’re talking surf rock: while bin-diving in a used record store sometime in the early 2000s, I excavated (and purchased unheard, based entirely on its cover art and title; it was a mood) what turned out to be an excellent psychedelic surf rock CD titled “A Glorious Lethal Euphoria” by The Mermen. Sadly, it seems to be out of print and not available online. But here’s them at Burning Man contemporary with that album (one of the signature tracks, “With No Definite Future And No Purpose Other Than To Prevail Somehow,” starts at ~1:40 in).

Yes, but with more surfing! And the chapter where the nine murderous pro surfers and their unrepentant accomplice are caught and sentenced could be called Hang Ten.
