Hot Ones with Cate Blanchett. As charming as one could imagine. As interesting and engaging as one could hope. Too much editorializing? Or just cold hard facts? You decide.

Admittedly there have been some great ones:

Key and Peele previously
Padma Lakshmi, to date the coolest cucumber on the show, hands down.
Billie Eilish
Lorde
First Gordon Ramsay
… and more!
(Sorry for not doing the other links- iPad %$^@!)

I was sure there were more previouslies but couldn’t find any.

"iPad %$^@!"

I have had to give up Metafilter on iPad. A few months ago I stopped being able to copy/paste text from this site on iPad. Something changed and it is only metafilter, as far as I have experienced.

Cate Blanchett's kitchen dance scene in Bandits (2001) was marvellous indeed

What a good one; used to watch them all but it’s been a while now. Absolute respect for shitting on leaf blowers.

Find her an absolutely fascinating screen presence. Almost always I feel like there's something impenetrable/icy in her performance. I would blame about 90% of that on Galadriel, but look at her in Nightmare Alley. This felt warm and open.

Loved watching how much she turned the tables and asked questions of Sean and really seemed to be studying him - not in a mean way, just in the way of someone who is fascinated in what makes people work.

And just how far has this little chicken wing show come? From odd soundcloud rappers to A-listers.

What are they eating? Not chicken wings.

Is Cate a vegetarian? They looked like tofu sticks.

They do vegan wings if requested by the guest, and Sean has whatever the guest is having.

That is largely due to just how good an interviewer Sean Evans is. There are about six supercuts by now of guests being blown away by how good his questions are.

An interview show with a really good interviewer, who can make the process feel like a conversation between equals, tends to have no trouble attracting good guests.

Obligatory Tom Scott: We tried the Hot Ones sauces. It was painful. - YouTube.

I don't watch every Hot Ones, just the guests I recognize in some way or another. But it is a great interview show, Sean does a good job. It was pretty neat that Cate turned the interview around in places. She also drank a bunch of the milk which looked like it had a bit of chocolate in it.

There are many gems down the Hot Ones chain, good questions asked within altered states.

To the best of my admittedly patchy knowledge, Aubrey Plaza is the only guest to have sucked milk up into her nose on purpose.

NPH one recently was pretty good too.

CHICKIE NUGGS

--
OK, I hadn't ever heard of this show before, but it's so good -- what a lovely surprise! The gimmick is great, because it puts both of the people in the conversation off-balance. But also, his questions were really good, and covered all sorts of things -- and he was confident enough to let her ask questions, or answer the way she wanted.

I would love to listen to these as a podcast, honestly, and for a full hour.

I would love, love, love to have a drink with her and hear her reminisce.

She also drank a bunch of the milk which looked like it had a bit of chocolate in it.

Just guessing but since she chose vegan wings, it was probably some variety of plant milk, which is often a bit darker than cow's milk. I mean, maybe it had chocolate! But that would be unusual.

I have a box of the Heatonist sauce collection downstairs that we were meant to use for a hot wings challenge with some family, but family backed out at the last minute. Last Dab is a million Scovilles and I'm not touching it.

This was a pretty good one, but as the first 2 comments on this thread indicate, the best Hot Ones is the one with Paul Rudd.

I have noticed that most of the guests who have handled the heat best have been women. People often say that women have a different relationship to pain than men do, but this show could turn out to be producing actual data on the matter. Kristen Bell, Lorde, Cate Blanchett, and Charlize Theron were all absolute champions.

Gordon Ramsay is so histrionic about it, it’s almost embarrassing. By contrast, Alton Brown is almost unflappable in his thoughtful critiques of the various sauces’ flavor profiles.

It’s a fun show with a great concept.

Women have lots of practice behaving smoothly while in various degrees of discomfort and pain (e.g. the very boots Cate wears on the show).

This is the best ever: Viola Davis
She's terrific, gives really thoughtful answers about acting and craft, he asks good questions, she's smart funny (the best kind) and she can handle the food all right-- she's often finishing a wing while he's asking a question.

I'm amazed at how well and how poorly different folks do on the show. I had a good long laugh when Idris Elba "threatened" to kick one of the creator's asses. David Blaine looked like he could have been eating mint chocolate chip ice cream for all of his reaction. Viola Davis was definitely a boss.

There's a ton of things to really appreciate about the show - the questions that they come up with. Sean's willingness to go along with the flow and his mirroring of the guests. The way that Da Bomb inevitably strips away almost everyone's veneer. (that sauce is awful and the fact that they've locked it permanently into the 8 spot is cheeky).

As they've moved up into the A-lister realm for guest stars - people on press junkets, etc - you have to think this show has real reach if they're able to secure these folks for, say, an hour in a press day. I suspect that for a lot of the stars in a press junket this is a real change of pace, which is welcome, minus the pain.

I admit I always watch for when people get to Da Bomb. There's another great supercut of "best reactions to Da Bomb", which starts with a clip from when Rob Lowe was on the show; they had just gotten up to Da Bomb, and Lowe is excited by the fact that they're almost done, and announces that "for this wing? I think I'm going to eat the whole thing." There is an immediate bunch of audible gasps from the crew off camera when he says this. "Oh wow, did you hear that?" Lowe says about the gasps. "That was awesome!.....And now I'm rethinking things!"

Sean has also been an occasional guest on late-night TV himself, bringing an abbreviated version of "Hot Ones" to the show. His visit to Stephen Colbert is way fun.

He also sometimes hosts a shorter challenge called "Truth or Dab", where it's a truth-or-dare format - he asks the question, and guests can either answer the question, or eat a "Last-Dab" doused hot wing. Gaten Matarazzo and Caleb McLaughlin did that before the 3rd Season of STRANGER THINGS and it is adorable.

I just re-watched the Key and Peele. I forgot that Key polishes off every bit of every wing, rather than taking one bite (or nibble) and binning the rest like most guests.

Thanks for the rec! I forgot that the Viola Davis one popped up in my feed and I haven't watched it yet.

I do miss when he showed the guest some weird pic from their Instagram and asked them to explain it.

Does the hot sauce cause and physical damage, or is it purely temporary pain (and emotional turmoil)? Obviously you don’t want to get it in your eyes, but if you manage to eat it correctly and ride it out will you be OK the next day?

Does the hot sauce cause an[y] physical damage

WebMD says no except in rare extreme cases. But as Quack said, the aftermath can feel pretty excruciating.

The current last dab is very nice. It's spicy sure, but really really nice. There's a beautiful fruity flavor. The heat will sneak up on you, so wait a bit if you think it's low voltage. But yeah I mean if you're into spicy things its manageable so long as you're thoughtful about dosage, put it tastes nice which is what sinks da bomb. Tbh I've found Painapple from Pex to be more overwhelming than the last dab.

My favorite Hot Ones is Michael Rapaport, because while discussing reality shows he introduced this phrase to my world: "His fuck style is wild." Which had nothing to do with anything.

Do you think the host is really eating the hot sauce or just pretending?
posted by Coaticass at 1:23 AM on October 31, 2022

Oh, yeah, he's eating it. He's been accused of faking it before, but when guests comment that he doesn't seem fazed, he points out that he's done a couple hundred of these interviews and knows what to expect.

If nothing else, he's definitely getting some of the hottest sauce, since he puts a little extra on that wing as a Thing.
