The (Culinary) Past Was A Mistake

B. Dylan Hollis is a content producer who makes recipes from vintage cookbooks with a comedic flair. Some recipes go well. Others...don't.

While his high energy shorts have built his reputation, Hollis shows a more thoughtful side with his longer form videos.

You know you've watched too many of his videos when you find yourself scaring the cat by yelling "FLOOF POWDAH!" into a mixing bowl.

Oh, I thought it was just me. I yell IN YOU GO whenever anything goes in the oven now!

Also, on the strength of his video for Watergate Salad I decided to try it; it's very, very sweet but it's actually better than you'd expect. I'll probably make his peanut butter bread in the near future.

I love him so much. He also plays accordion!

And piano! I think he came to his college as a music major.

I love him. He is worth much of the downside of Tik-tok etc.

Also he has a fair number of vintage-car videos.

I can't remember what video it was - but it's one of the ones where he's making something awful. There's a moment where there's a noise off camera - something falls down, perhaps - and he is startled, and then looks into the camera fearfully and says, "I think I've summoned something."

I will never not laugh at that.

omg, I love this guy. He's great. I say 'nilla all the time now. Well, only when I'm using vanilla, but still...

FIYAR!!!

Pretty funny. God, those "recipes"...

When I first brought the later-to-be Ms. Windo to my parents house for a visit, my mom was freaked out about her being vegetarian, and so, made that Tomato Aspic...

It was not a hit.

Well, he's no shrinking violet is he?

I love him so much. Making fun of mid century recipes is all well and good, but the ones where things go right really are lovely. His most recent one that worked was a Pinto Bean Cake.

We’ve been fans of his here in the Casa for a while now, and he’s a big “I feel like hell, let me watch him to cheer up” item.

Also, because of the power of weird synchrony, my wife is right now making a Wacky Cake.

He's great fun! I've got the wacky cake & the peanut butter cookies on my agenda.

We just made the pinto bean cake this week. It was...not so good, though maybe we had too many beans. Decent flavor on the front, turns to beans on the back.

On the other hand, the potato cake was delightful. 10/10, would potato again.

I have the ingredients for making tang cookies in the cupboard but have not yet gotten to doing it.

I absolutely love his stuff, and the compilations started with a bunch I'd never seen. The liver patties ones had me in tears laughing. TEARS.

He is from Bermuda. Somehow I thought Bermudans would have a British accent?

A bit of a tangent, but when I'm measuring spices, I find myself involuntarily singing, "Cinnamon and ginger, nutmeg and cloves, and that gave thee thy jolly red nose."

I love this guy’s voice when he does long form things. I hope he can record audio books; he would be such an uplifting narrator for culinary anthropology nonfiction, for example.

Long time fan here. Our kids cook his recipes sometimes.

I do want to send him a new clock though. It paid the price for his art.

That WAS delightful and had me screaming “put the knife DOWN!”

His look reminds of me of the Before Steve from the Captain America movies.

I wonder if he gets that comment often, as he stated in one video that if the recipe was what it said it was, then he was Cap.

Guaranteed to make me laugh out loud, and more than once reduced me to helpless giggling fits. I love everything about these and yes, I too have picked up all the 'NILLA!' and 'floof powder' and 'FIYAH' and assorted quotable quotes. The man's got talents.
