Pet Fish Reveals Credit Card Details During Pokémon Violet Livestream: Mutekimaru Channel is a Japanese YouTuber whose most well-known livestream series is called 'Fish Play Pokémon'. On these streams — you guessed it — some pet fish actually manages to play through entire Pokémon games. [...] But how do they play? Mutekimaru has created a program and circuit board that uses motion tracking. The board has a sheet of paper and various button inputs on it, and it's placed behind the fish tank. When the fish swims by the button, the circuit board picks up the movement and inputs the relevant movement. On 15th January, while playing Pokémon Violet on stream, the game crashed and the fish found themselves going into the Switch's menu, and then the eShop. It's a... journey, to say the least. Once on the eShop, the fish manage to browse a few games such as Minecraft and Minecraft Legends, but not before popping into the wallet page and adding 500 yen to Mutekimaru's account — which is where the credit card details were on show! Being doxxed by your fish on a gaming stream is one of the most cyberpunk things I can think to happen in 2023 and I kind of love it. What a weird world we live in.

Mutekimaru has announced, however, that Pokémon Violet will be the very last Fish Play Pokémon.

Funny that this happened nearly solely because these new Pokemon games apparently shipped as so glitchy that they crash all the time.

That video is hilarious, even without being able to read the captions.

I have to enter my password every time I go into the eShop on my Switch. How did the fish manage to bypass this? This feels like it was somewhat allowed to happen.

I have to enter my password every time I go into the eShop on my Switch.

There's an option to disable the password prompt and keep it saved so that you don't have to do this every time you access the Switch eShop for convenience.

The world has always been a William Gibson novel, it just wasn't evenly distributed.

This would make a great plot point in a heist movie where the heroes swap in a specially trained fish to compromise the victim's security.

Might as well give my fish a credit card, the amount they cost me to keep.

Huh. In my household, I would rate the dogs as having the highest likelihood of doxxing me because they are both overly friendly, goofy idiots who would think nothing of sharing personal details with any new friend. I'll keep a closer eye on the fish.

A few years back some lords of chaos decided to link the twitch comment section to the controls of pokemon. So the hive mind could play it. It was a million chimps at a million typewriters situation, Hamlet would be a great name for a ground type.

The truth is that the cosmic microwave background radiation can play pokemon. The player is immortal and there are infinite retries. It will eventually settle at the bottom of the pachinko machine after all the random bounces.

Hens play pokemon. Peck peck.

No problem, the fish can get a new job in the hacked tank at that casino we were talking about a bit ago.

If I step away from a machine without locking it, my cat will occasionally try to run a command. I keep a text file of her attempts:

Appparently, these fish also found a previously unknown glitch in Sapphire.

So they have a history of breaking Pokemon games.

Nintendo doen't. I just checked on my Switch, it only shows the last four digits and there is no button to show more.
I also need to input my password twice during the process. The whole video feels kind of fake.

Not to be a killjoy but I'm seconding the_dreamwriter's feeling. I work in e-commerce and to process credit cards, you need to be what's called PCI compliant. The rules are strict enough that most merchants have a third party handle it. If you're not compliant, card companies like Visa won't process your transactions because you are considered too risky.

Part of compliance is storing a token instead of the actual card credentials, so there's no way to display a full card number to a user (or the merchant) after it's saved in a digital wallet — just a partial to help them recognize which card it is. There's no way a company as big as Nintendo isn't PCI compliant.
