I'm not sure that even CGI-assisted live action is powerful enough to encompass the sheer weirdness of One Piece. But I'd love to see them try!

I will predict that this will have one B+ season, one D- season, and then be canceled.

Keen sense of pattern recognition. *taps head three times*

Netflix's Cowboy Bebop has also made me pessimistic.

Why?

(Note that that "why" was not in response to alex_skazat, it was asking why we got a live-action ONE PIECE in the first place)

Does Netflix charge extra for people sharing promos of their shows?

(Not a slam at you, just really salty about how they’ve conducted themselves because it’s been an annoyance to my mother-in-law and friends with kids who use our account)

I love One Piece. I have little interest in a live action version. Who is this for?

I am glad this is not a Goofy origin story

I’m not a One Piece fan, mostly because, while I found it charming initially, the endless volume and consequent noodling around was just too much. The actors in this version seem charming, so, if the action is well-handled, this could be a fun watch, but I’m worried that, as a Netflix show, it will get 2, maybe 3, seasons, that they aim to tell a complete story in that frame. Because I’ve read or watched the first chunk of One Piece too often, and I’d like just a taste of resolution.

I read this as a live action One Punch which would also be weird and wonderful.

Is the Goofy origin story the tale of a man who gets combined with parts of a dog, or the tale of a dog who gets combined with parts of a man? Inquiring minds want to know!

Never heard of the manga, hand to God I clicked thinking this was about Goofy (which, of course, would never be on Netflix).

I like the sense of humor. Looks gorgeous. Seems like something I like.

But invest my time in a Netflix property? Thanks, no. I'll read the reviews, and wait and see how Netflix handles it. Way too many series cancelled without warning, and in the middle of the story.

Netflix dumping a lot of money into an existing property because it already has a fan base, but without caring if the new product a) is good or b) lasts seems to be their MO. I can appreciate that times are hard for netflix, now that other companies understand what the words “international streaming rights” mean, but they’ve not released one series that is anything less than teen-orientated filler tv for the past five years. For a company that created it’s reputation with Breaking Bad and House of Cards, that seems like an oversight

I'm a little curious to see where One Piece ends up falling on Rurouni Kenshin (2012) ---- Netflix Death Note live-action anime scale.

Looks like a great kids show for the six to twelve year old set!

Huh, I thought Disney had the monopoly on that market...

betweenthebars - What are the axes on that? Because I've watched Kenshin, but not Death Note, so I am intrigued!

I'm current with the manga and my kids and I are almost current with the anime, we're 2 or 3 episodes behind right now I think, so we're pretty big One Piece fans (my kids even got to see one of the live shows at USJ when they visited Japan before the pandemic). We will definitely watch this but we've all already seen how stories get messed up when they're brought to new media so we'll be going in with low expectations.

At the very least this can't be worse than the live adaptations of Attack on Titan and Fullmetal Alchemist.

The Top
Rurouni Kenshin (2012), excellent casting, some fantastic action set pieces, a story that respects the source material while being accessible to new audiences.

Death Note (2006), worth watching, improves on the manga in some ways. Detective Pikachu and Ace Attorney are game adaptations, otherwise they'd go here.

The Middle
Bleach, Gintama, Alice in Borderland, and so on

What happened here?
Full Metal Alchemist, Attack on Titan, xxxHolic, Cowboy Bebop

OH NO
Netflix Death Note
Willem Dafoe as Ryuk is perfect, L is pretty good, other than that, so many baffling choices. This is a good film for people who miss inadvertent camp. It's like 2000s Hot Topic except a movie-like thing.

I've heard rumours of a live-action Ghost in the Shell and Dragonball Z, but even I have my limits.

My absolute favourite live-action film based on a manga is Crows Zero. Gloriously over the top high school battle gang melodrama.
