"Build or Burn"

In a Green New Deal for New York state, the NY legislature passed the Build Public Renewables Act (BPRA) which instructs the New York Power Authority to switch to renewable energy by 2030. Many municipal properties are also required to transition away from fossil fuels, and the bill makes allowances for low income customers. In These Times reports how grassroots organizing by socialists made this happen.

This week in California, the state legislature passed a sweeping emissions disclosure bill. Interested in keeping up with these positive (and negative) climate policy developments? I highly recommend Bill McKibben's newsletter, The Crucial Years.

As I understand it, and would be happy to be corrected, NYPA provides about 25% of NYS power. 80% of that is already hydroelectric. 5% of power state wide is still pretty great!

The teams that got this done worked on it for years, facing seasons after seasons of disappointment, the dissolution of organizations, partnerships, and houses, and a pandemic. they remained dogged. They used electoral politicking, in the street protest, civil disobedience and media campaigns all together in order to get this result. I am extremely proud of them.

If there's a Build Public Renewables Act ("BPRA"), it should mandate creation of a Building Public Renewables Department ("BPRD"). Logo checks out.
