Love Honk

I had a dream last night that there was a new popular form of music called Love Honk. Every song was basically just smooth jazz or soft rock instrumentals, but where the lead singer or main instrument should have been playing, there was just a loud, constant car horn.” My fellow Nordics will probably be reminded by Silverspots’ Cohost post of the Ylvis sketch Car Horn Classics (English subtitles in captions).

In 2019 or 2020, I had a dream that the then-President of the United States had composed a piece of classical music for symphony and chorus. The score called for one of the percussionists to rhythmically smash full bottles of champagne. (Not a soloist — the champagne-smasher sat in the back of the orchestra with the rest of the percussion section.) The composer, who had a reputation for confusing price with value, believed that expensive champagne bottles made a better sound when smashed than cheap champagne bottles. Rehearsals were a challenge, because every time the conductor said "let's run that section again" it cost thirty thousand dollars in wine.

My dream was probably inspired by Tan Dun's Water Concerto, which I had heard on the radio, starting from a low-splashing section in the middle (as linked), but without any explanatory context.

Oh man But tomorrow is another day..., that rubber bulb horn Careless Whisper cover was somehow more indecent than the original cocaine sax version.
Misplaced honks have a certain lewdness about them.

I laughed so hard I started to gurgle. Nothing like a good audio shitpost. Nothing like dream humor, either -- a lot of times, other people's dreams are tiresome, but when the jokes land it's just the best.

Previously also: Horn Honk Depot, which also made me laugh until there were physical side effects

Would a car horn player be seated in the brass section of a classic orchestra, or are they better placed in a modern orchestra with the synthesizers?

16 years ago Folkways released the CD Por Por: Honk Horn Music of Ghana by The La Drivers Union Por Por Group which -- to quote NPR -- features "the unique combination of drums, singing, bells and squeeze-bulb horns." Highly recommended!
