I know he played everything on his albums. I know he's considered one of the best guitarists out there by some seriously god like guitarists, but it never ceases to amaze me to see things like "hey, I'll just play the bass like a lead guitar and have my bassist play the underlay."

I may not have always liked his music, but that dude was always at least interesting.

That was great! Always loved bass guitar. The fact that it's so percussive, low, can bend, move. It's underused as an actual instrument, IMO, as it's usually performed in a turn-key manner.

It is on a strap, that thing below is not the strap, but a "sustain bar" connecting the headstock to the body. See here for a better pic of the instrument:
