“Mujer saliendo del psicoanalista (Podría ser Juliana)”

Upon entering the show, the consistent orange and golden hues of her paintings set the room aglow. A few of her subjects’ faces, inlayed with mother-of-pearl, catch the light like flecks of the moon. The paintings beckon us to plunge into their vaporous worlds while challenging us to decode intricate scenarios. from Remedios Varo in a Sphere of Her Own [hyperallergic]

We flew to Chicago last weekend with the single goal of seeing the exhibit at the Art Institute, and let me tell you - if you can get there before the end of the month, you should. I'm on the hunt now for the exhibit catalog from the 2000 exhibit at the National Museum of Women in the Arts.

In 2012, I was fortunate enough to be in LA at the same time as LACMA was exhibiting In Wonderland: The Surrealist Adventures of Women Artists in Mexico and the United States. Wow. What a show! Frida, Leonora, Dorothea...and ten paintings by Remedios Varo. As has been said about Every Painter Ever, seeing these works in person is The Best. However, if your local art museum doesn't have Varos's paintings on view, reproductions of her work are still enchanting.

The mother of pearl faces were so enchanting in person. I was fetched up on a bench in front of one and a lady was taking a picture of a painting with a MOP face, and I said "get low, see how the color changes on the face" and 2 minutes later there was a crowd of people on their knees and squatting down to look at it and the museum guard was like "um what"

One of the best things Tumblr has done for me was introduce me to Varo's art.

Gentlyepigrams I came in to say I had just encountered her painting Papilla Estelar like last week in a meme on facebook.

I first encountered a Remedios Varos in a black-and-white halftone and it still blew my mind.
