It's a pretty sad indictment of the 21st century that pop stars are better human beings than politicians

how does that work with the first amendment? isn't it categorically illegal to ban books?

The first amendment only guards against a TOTAL government ban on a book EVERYWHERE. Technically, these bans only cover access to books in Florida schools - you can still buy the books in question on Amazon or check it out of the regular library.

That is, if you have the money to buy it or your library has it.

So this is technically not a first amendment violation, but ONLY just.

A racist Floridian who says she's "not a book person" has opinions on books she's never read.

Florida mother behind ban on Amanda Gorman poem has Proud Boys links
She also revealed that she only read snippets of the books that she sought to ban at the education center. The books include The ABCs of Black History, poetry by Langston Hughes and books on Cuba, all of which she has criticized for “indirect hate messages”, references to critical race theory and gender indoctrination.

“They have to read for me because I’m not an expert,” Salinas told JTA. “I’m not a reader. I’m not a book person. I’m a mom involved in my children’s education.”

the Pink Effect, like the Streisand Effect but in reverse. Something gets banned and Pink distributes it, giving it visibility above and beyond what it had before the banning.

oh look, it's working! Pink's Plan To Hand Out 'Banned' Books Sparks Conservative Backlash

[Note: the "conservative backlash" is 2 doofuses on Xitter, one of whom refers to porn as p0rn.]

p.s. I love Pink. She rocks.

p.p.s. that Newsweek article threw scare quotes around banned. As if they aren't really banned. As if that were the issue here

Anything that might make your kids realize that they're part of a system of white supremacy and become uncomfortable with that fact...

I often find myself wondering if these bans aren’t ploys to eventually get 1A in front of this SCOTUS to see if they won’t chip away at it somehow.

It’s republicans, the constitution is like Jesus, a thing to be revered in principle and ignored in practice and you certainly don’t want to go listening to the words.

Only if we try to sue them over a banning. That's why I say we fight fire with fire and get The Bible or some other dear-to-them book banned instead, and make them sue US to get it unbanned.

Wouldn’t work? They’re not bound by rules and hypocracy doesn’t shame them.

I'm not trying to shame them, I'm trying to trick them into doing the opposite of what they wanted to do. I'm thinking something like:

I write into a school to get the Bible banned. Moms for Liberty has a hissy fit and says that hang on, this kind of book banning is too restrictive. I point out that it's fitting the same kind of rules that they claim are causing them to get other books banned. They claim The Bible is different and should be protected because it's a religious text. I point out that this is a violation of the First Amendment - if you want the Bible in, you gotta have everything else in. Or - if you want to keep the Talmud out, we need to keep the Bible out. They sue to keep the Bible in - except they can't just go for the Bible, they have to include every religious text.

Which puts Moms for Liberty on the side of INCLUSION when it comes to the kind of books that can be in school libraries.

Honestly do not think that kind of thing works as their brains do not work like that and they do not operate under that set of constraints.

Okay, fair enough, but on the other hand it will make them mad and waste their time and that's something, yeah?
