Modern flip phones stink because they’re just made of recycled scraps from the smartphone-manufacturing process.

Seems to me that would be a reason why they don’t stink.

That weird time between Christmas and New Years when people feel compelled to make lists.

Because it's easy to write them weeks in advance and then have it go up when you are on vacation that week.

I had no idea about the moons craters that was very cool to read and then look into!

But some lists are holiday traditions!

That weird time between Christmas and New Years

My friend says this week exists outside of space-time, and nothing you do in that time period really matters. So, I guess what happens in Xmas->NYE week, stays in Xmas->NYE week.

Nah. Tis the season for really unpopular decisions by the government. Very much of what happens in this week sticks because it passes without comment

For example, EPA just handed the future of its climate strategy for the USA to the State of Louisiana. Because no one is paying attention. No one has to deal with the consequences, until later

But I enjoyed the cockroach story from the Atlantic list. It was comforting to remember how forgetful people are.

It reminds me of the air pollution problem, which is made so invisible in the USA by social segregation. But it also gave me hope that we can solve it. Including the pollution from American cyanamid, where my relatives work, which was featured in the story

My friend says this week exists outside of space-time

Every month should have some non-time like that. Start each month on Monday the 1st, finish on Sunday the 28th, exactly four weeks, and have as many month-end reset/padding days as it takes to get to the 1st of the next month. If you're forced to work during those days, you should get double time plus other days off during the month.

Welcome to Feral Week
The week between Christmas and New Year’s is a uniquely debauched time that deserves some commemoration.

I liked this list a lot, and I fully support The Atlantic in summarising its year's achievements.

The fungus article was a particular standout for me.
