Billie Eilish, Cynthia Erivo, Dua Lipa, Jon Batiste, Julia Michaels, and Olivia Rodrigo sit down and have a powerhouse discussion of music, songwriting, and a lot of women's voices. Plus Jon Batiste being his wonderful weird self. Songwriters Roundtable: Billie Eilish, Olivia Rodrigo, Dua Lipa, Jon Batiste, Cynthia Erivo & More [The Hollywood Reporter, 1h] This is full of really great moments and insights, truly.

The rather late moment where Cynthia Erivo sort of reads Julia Michaels her beads about needing to be able to recognize her own contributions honestly so young girls can see that women matter in the industry is one of the most beautiful moments ever captured between famous people on video.

That was quite a lovely video. The mutual admiration and respect around the table, the way these incredibly talented people are also fans, the genuine interest in each other's work-- I mean, they're all up for the same award, right? After awhile the moderator almost didn't have to speak at all, they were all just having a conversation amongst themselves. And then it gets even more intense with the moment you mention hippybear. Great find.

And it may be going too far, but is there a generational aspect to this? It's hard to imagine a similar kind of, I dunno, almost egoless vibe, or desire to lift up your peers, amongst a similar cohort from earlier generations.

IME, musicians, like most artists, are generally very supportive (and aware) of each other, both within their own generational cohort as well as without. We simply happily live in an era where these sorts of get-togethers are arranged and recorded for public consumption.

The age span at this particular table was nicely spread-out, with Rodrigo and Eilish on the young end (20 and 22 respectively,) Erivo and Batiste on the “old” end (36 and 37,) and Lipa and Michaels holding down the center (28 and 30.) I’m sure this was a purposeful construct, which works beautifully.

This was a wonderful watch. Thanks hippybear for sharing. Now I need to find more along these lines.

Thorzdad, you said we live in an era where these are recorded for public consumption - please send them my way.

Happy New Year to everyone here!

@hippybear I think you and others interested in this post will love this Vanity Fair video of Finneas and Billie Eilish describing how they compose and recorded "What Was I Made For".

I have a weird relationship with music--I love it on my car radio for the most part, but I never listen to music outside my car--I used to play and read music and can no longer do either. So, these kinds of things are not usually my jam, but I am so glad to have seen this. Such bright, caring, interesting people. Gave me a feeling of hope for the future.

I do think a large part of why this roundtable is such a good discussion is because it is largely women.

I've watched a lot of these roundtables from across the years -- several outfits do them, aside from THR also LATimes and at least one other I can't remember -- and the difference in the quality of depth of genuine discussion that happens between the actor roundtables and the actress roundtables so SO huge!

It's gotten for me to where I look at the list of people who are going to be there and then weigh the makeup of the group to decide if it's a Watch Now or Maybe Later. WAY TOO MANY of these have been all white men, and wow does that get boring after you've seen something better, deeper, and more diverse.
