WikiFlix and WikiVibes

WikiFlix is a tool to browse and search the films uploaded to the Wikimedia Commons. Created by Magnus Manske, and inspired by Sandra Fauconnier's project, it is a companion to WikiVibes, which is a similar tool for songs. Among the movies on offer are classics like Fritz Lang's Metropolis, Maya Deren's Meshes of the Afternoon and a whole bunch of Chaplin.

Oh how neat! Magnus Manske has made a lot of great tools for Wikipedia and I look forward to exploring this one.

I can't tell from the link, but my guess is that's not the most recent restoration of Metropolis. Missing footage was found in 2008, and I think only Kino Lorber has the full edition.

Fantastic, doesn't work too well on a desktop browser sadly (no way to flick the rows across)

Regarding Metropolis, I only recently watched a colorized clip of the dance of the false Maria and hokey smokes! You can see her nas-nas! I had no idea how R-18 this pre-Code classic turned out to be. Also, I was suddenly struck that all the *looks up in awe* slack jawed 'dolly in' crane shots of the collective Spielberg face can be traced all the way back to this 1927 silent classic. Truly, Metropolis deserves all its glory and then some.

Cool! TIL that there is a Frankenstein movie from 1911... I've been using the terrible 1931 film when I teach that novel, but now I've got a movie that is somewhat closer to the plot.. though everyone lives happily ever after.

On my Lenovo laptop I can scroll the rows with a two-fingered swipe. I'm not sure what the real mouse equivalent would be.
