This rules plep, the context provided with the prints makes it so much better. I spent a year studying Meiji era Japan back in high school. I miss hama7 for these kinds of links.

Absolutely awesome, plep. I saw some of these at the weekend market of Hanazono Shrine in Shinjuku, and have been looking for more information about them since. Meiji restoration stuff is always a facinating look at an extreme cultural upheaval and its echos still ring loud in Japanese society today.

Side note...yeah, I miss hama7's extreme contrasts in taste too.
