Tour d' Afrique, the other Tour. Ninety-nine stages, 120 days, almost 8,000 miles, racing on bicycles riding across the continent of Africa... the long way... from the pyramids of Giza to Cape Town. Registration's still open! Come on, it'll be fun!

If anyone's interested in this route, Paul Theroux documented it in his book "Dark Star Safari: Overland from Cairo to Cape Town." I went cycling in Kenya this summer and the Maasai may be great runners, but I was able to get my revenge on the bike. I popped two tires riding over acacia branches.

Nah.
If I win, everyone'll just accuse me of blood doping or something.

And that other Tour is also on at the moment...Paris-Dacca race. I've been watching the highlights every day. Mad. Not quite as mad as bicycles though. Good luck with that.

I'm being serious!

How do they organise support crews? How in hell's name are they gonna keep an eye on such a spread out, slow moving field?

Surely someone's gonna get eaten by a critter?

(Erm, does it explain it in the link coz I haven't RTFL!!!)

err...that would be Dakar, Senegal and not Dacca, Bangladesh.

Paris-Dakar by bike.
Great Flickr photo of an African bike race.
Does look like fun, though. Thanks, Rocky Chrysler.
