Now I know how to Criticize Lin Piao and Discredit Him Completely, next time won't you join with me? Lots of other great covers on this site, but this one takes the (happy kids marching with rifles) cake. (via)

Meh, I think "Little Red Guards Attend a Repudiation Meeting" is the overlooked B-side classic.

lpcoverlover is a great site. It's been in my newsreader for a while now and I've taken great pleasure in annoying my friends with random images from it.

But please this has nothing to do with the election please cut it out with the sniping please a nice post isn't improved by snarky namedropping please stop please stop please...

This reminds me of the time I criticized Lin Piao, but only discredited him partially. Most embarrassing day of my life.

That's good, too. But pretty much everyone agrees it's not as good as their first album.

That one had tracks like Chase the Intellectual Counter-Revolutionary into The River, and Repudiate the Claims of the Imperialist Capitalist Hey Nonny Na.

God, two-part epics like this rock my world: That "Criticize Lin Piao" instrumental prelude, with its rapid triplet arpeggios on the Hammond organ with a killer bass part doubled by a lusheng, and horsehide drums, and that screaming Yngwie-style lead guitar joining at the end? Fucking SHREDS. But it is as nothing compared to the hairs-on-the-back-of-the-neck-standing-up moment when "Discredit Him Completely" kicks in. It just throws you out the window and sends you the bill afterward. My kinda cultural revolution! BEIJING ROCK CITY.

The more literal translation of the song name is "Criticize Lin Biao Till He Smells for 10,000 Years".

You look like Lin Biao, and you smell like him, too!

Pitchforks pronounced it faux-volutionary and hostile to the agrarian uprising. Rating: 4

Fun site! Clicked on the Hairdoos and dont's. Read a comment at the bottom of the page saying "These girls have PHD’s - Pentecostal HairDo’s!" . Immediately thought of Palin, who is Pentecostal and wondered about that teased hairstyle of hers. Scrolled up. ROFL! omg

Faux Maoist-hipsterism aside, here's some info on the man himself. The song was probably part of the Criticize Lin Biao, Criticize Confucius campaign.

I prefer "Little Red Guards Attend a Repudiation Meeting" because it's got a dance beat.

"Little Red Guards Attend a Repudiation Meeting"

Deeply creepy and, at the same time, quite inspired.

Thanks, ericbop.

Am I the only one who wishes that they had actually posted the music, as well?

SV: They don't include any of these particular tracks, but Songs of China's Cultural Revolution (particularly "I am a Little Member of the Commune" and "Little Ping Pong Ball"), and Rethinking Cultural Revolution Culture: an Audio-Visual Accompaniment to the Exhibit should give you an idea of what they'd be like.
