Kristin Cammermeyer: Paintings

More paintings that I like: This time, they are by Kristin Cammermeyer. Here is a statement about the paintings. Here are some examples that I particularly like.
Cammermeyer is featured in the latest issue of New American Paintings.
(The way the website takes you to the paintings is a bit weird, though.)

Discover America's finest emerging artists
I know it's a very established descriptor in the art world, but, I wish they'd drop it. "Emerging artists" just sounds so... precious, or something.
Or, sci-fi. I picture the artists emerging from some sort of bio-mechanical pod, and zapping me with their tentacle art-ray.

That "I" link hurts my soul. I think that the feeling you get from the interface is the exact opposite of the intended feeling of the paintings.

It's right up there with debut novelist, as a phrase I am sick of hearing.

I think that when you've got an online image gallery, it's really important to keep the controls simple and in the same place. They could have made something that looks great with simple HTML, CSS and JPGs, but no, they have to encapsulate everything in a Flash object.

All the interface hate. I can understand it, because what is it with artist's websites, amirite, but I like some of the paintings quite a bit, myself.
She needs to get the high-school doodles out of the Archive/Miscellany section, though. It doesn't need padding that badly.

Oh wow, I hadn't even noticed. Except for this one, which is the best thing on the site, for some odd reason.

That's the kind of web interface I expect out of a photographer.

Whatever it takes to keep people from stealing my images, that's what I require. That, and it has to navigate like no other site on the web. Period. Those are my design criteria.

I've got news for you. Unless you're somebody really major, nobody wants your images. Sorry to burst your bubble.

Your smug and superior tone is misplaced, my friend. You have no way of knowing what images someone who's out to steal images might want. And as a matter of fact, when it comes to stealing images, the less "really major" you are, the more likely it is that your images will be stolen and reused elsewhere. The image thief knows that the little people have less power and resources at their disposal to track down such misuses, and to sue.

It's nice work. Sort of like David Hockney meets Arschille Gorky meets the cover of Dark Side of the Moon. You can tell she is pretty brave with her materials, too, which is a damn near priceless virtue.

Wow, that site really has hit the pinnacle of obnoxiousness.
Too bad I'm also "meh" on the paintings themselves. For some really awesome paintings, it might even out, but as is, it was a sub-par internet experience.

Before I even clicked on the links or the comment thread, I knew this was mostly going to be about the interface, not the art.
Her works make me uncomfortable kind of like the works of Francis Bacon do. Though I'm delighted by the play of color, line, etc, there's this existential sense of "body horror" (for lack of a better phrase) . . . and yet this body doesn't seem to have boundaries -- in fact, it's the background, not the foreground. Whether that says more about me or about the art, I have no idea. Cool stuff.

It is bad enough when artist-types sacrifice usability to make a graphical or design statement, but this is just a long, ugly, "pages turning" montage, every time I click into the site.
