MeFi post: Grimes is not your waif
Yeah, half of them died.

I think it was Andy Ihnatko who pointed out a while back that The Who have a lead singer and lead guitarist left, while the Beatles have a drummer and a bassist, and that they should totally get together and kick ass on the greatest rock and roll tour since forever.

MeFi post: NATO airstrikes kill 12 children in Kunar, Afghanistan
wolfdreams01 in all this you are making the big assumption that this Afghan leader who probably cannot identify Idaho on a map let alone Boston is wanting to kill American civilians.
The Afghans, just about all of them want America and their allied forces to fuck off home and leave them to their internal tribal power squabbles in Afghanistan and in the Pastun tribal homelands which cross over into Pakistan
I would seriously question that those labelled Terrorists are... [more]

When asked why all 13 were female, Maynard noted that more than 60 percent of the officers in the system are female, adding that women are more likely not to have criminal records and be able to pass tests needed to qualify.

Well, at least this won't reinforce the stereotypical view of Baltimore based on The Wire or anything.

You missed the point, it's not Baltimore, it's this whole country.

MeFi post: For the Emperor! For the Imperium of Man!
Awesome creation, but silly suit from a tactical perspective.

Terminators are slow, for sure, but you have to think of them less as people, and more like tanks that walk. They are heavily armored and can take an incredible amount of punishment. They have an incredible amount of firepower (a Terminator can easily carry an assault cannon in one hand). And also, they kick ass.

A normal Space Marine is faster.... [more]

MeFi post: Play with pathfinding
Eideteker: " how do people represent infinity computationally?"

Infinity is one part of a larger class in computing that represents DEEP HURTING for the uninitiated and unwary:

What does -1.#IND mean? (indefinite Not-A-Number)

How do I access the magic IEEE floating point values like NaN in code? (internals, but also don't do that.)

What does 1#J mean? A strange corner... [more]

Jump point is basically A* plus this:

prune the set of immediate neighbours around a node by trying to prove that an optimal path exists from the parent of the current node to each neighbour and that path does not involve visiting the current node.

So trim out any nodes from the search which would lead straight back to the current node. Duh. These things always seem so obvious, after somebody else discovers them...... [more]

Let's not even get into the issue of going to the bathroom.

Are you talking about the physical problem of eliminating waste in that suit, or the engineering/social problem of getting in and out of bathrooms and stalls?

The second one is the reason he has that big hammer.

Have you ever seen what a genestealer does to drones? It's not pretty. Besides, that's no ordinary human. That there is a genetically modified, seven to eight foot tall behemoth of righteous fury and the personification of divine will driven from on high by the emperor himself as he sits on the golden throne.

I think I need help.

Warhammer is one of those things it's surprisingly easy to get obsessive about. I have to remind myself about the amount of brainspace I've dedicated to histories, point values, tactics, painting techniques, and so on every time I see a kid focused on Pokemon or Beyblade or Digimon or whatever it is they're doing on my damn lawn. Usually, I stop myself in time, but sometimes... sometimes... before I even realize it the foam suit is on and the chainsword is a'hummin'.... [more]

Actually, even though I was creating websites professionally in the '90s, I was also self-taught mostly through online sources and doing a lot of view-source, and hung out more with artists and musicians than fellow techies (these were also my clients, which is why I wasn't making any money). So a lot of the culture of the early tech era was lost on me, including the correct pronunciations of Linux and GIF. I always pronounced it with a soft 'G,' until I moved to the SF Bay in 2000 to work for... [more]

I've given up on even knowing what my own preference is for .gif—I've used both, gotten hollered at for both, made arguments for both, have dumb punny mnemonics for both—but I can unambiguously assert that soft-g is the more laidback choice in terms of the actual mechanics of enunciation. That alveolar stop in hard-g "gif" is just plain more hustle and bustle than the affricative in "jif", like you have to lower your shoulder and lean into that... [more]

In another (deleted) post, someone mentioned that the flu vaccine does not work very well this year, so it's natural that people will have doubts about the efficacy of vaccines in general. However, the Measles vaccine most certainly does work, and the BBC (not the Mail) does report that the rate of measles vaccination has declined, and now Wales and parts of England are seeing an outbreak/epidemic. So far, one adult has died from measles. So it would seem that giving your kids vaccinations,... [more]

Navigators could tell where they were by looking at the water which is pretty mind blowing.

No, true in lots of places. Back before we tamed/ruined the Mississippi, a big part of being a riverboat pilot was reading the waters. The river, being so large and silty, changed constantly, so charts were useless for safe navigation, as was knowing where you were. You might know that you'd just reached Cairo, IL*, but you had no idea where the sandbars had... [more]

There's been such a fuss made over the past few years about supposed sailing 'feats' made by people with GPS, radar, more or less constant contact with shore-based experts via radio or satellite phone etc. Compare that sort of voyage with those you have linked here, or even the story of Joshua Slocum, the first person to circumnavigate the globe single-handedly by sea and it's pretty clear to me that 'adventure' and 'single-handed' mean something entirely different these days.... Sigh. Linked-to article is about conservatives upset because of funding for waterfowl research. Because it's possible to make anything look like a stupid waste of money if one personally don't like it enough, and refers to it derisively. Basically, we're not allowed to learn anything anymore.
