MeFi post: Collect 'em all!
Coveting possessions is unhealthy. Here's how I look at it:

All of the computers on Ebay are mine. In fact, everything on Ebay is already mine. All of those things are just in long term storage that I pay nothing for. Storage is free.

When I want to take something out of storage, I just pay the for the storage costs for that particular thing up to that point, plus a nominal shipping fee, and my things are delivered to me so I can use them.... [more]

Music post: musk
I just this second started watching what looks like a shitty movie called "Lost Souls" on CityTV here in Toronto and clicked play on your song just as the opening credits were rolling and you wouldn't believe how perfectly it synced up and worked with the score. Don't know what that means but there you go. One of those things.

MeFi post: calling it quits
Asking Antiochians what's wrong with their school is like asking economists to forecast: ten people will easily give fifteen differing opinions. The lack of endowment or other substantive funding was a huge burden; "without an endowment," as deanc said, "they probably had no flexibility at all and no ability to offer financial aid to students they wanted/needed to attract, so it was just a matter of time." What's more, good financial aid packages would be offered to... [more]

MetaTalk post: Overeager moderation?
“That makes no sense at all.”

It makes perfect sense. I think you're missing the point.

You're free to argue that X and Y are alike while Z is different. I'm free to argue that X, Y, and Z are all alike. And konolia is free to argue that X, Y, and Z are all different. But none of us can argue that one of the others is a hypocrite unless that other person is being inconsistent within their own beliefs.

well, a woman might be curious about what it tastes like because she can't (unless she's fantastically flexible) reach down there and taste it herself.

why on earth do some youtube videos take forever to load while others, even if they're longer and you're trying to watch them at the same time of day, take no time at all? that last video just isn't loading for me.

MeFi post: Barack's roots start showing
Also interesting to note is that Obama's father's ancestors owned some of Strom Thurmond's ancestors, during the controversial "Opposite Day" year of 1625 (rarely taught in American schools), in which Belgian explorers to Kenya were enslaved and forced to work in banana fields. Al Sharpton's ancestors were also involved, and it has come to be learned that they enslaved the Cherokee people of North America - rumor has it that they were shipped to America four hundred years BC, crowded... BTW, there was a much better video that this on ebaumsworld. Some dickhead base jumping off a dam, his parachute got caught on a pipe or something and he hung in the air before slamming into the ground a breaking every bone in his body. Great footage, the bit at the end was like when Darth Vader gets melted by the lava WOAAAURGHAQWWWAAARGQWAH etc.

2. The video was posted earlier in the thread, just not from Ebaums.

MeFi post: Can photographers be plagarists?
A fairly good couple of essays in Harper's this month consider "plagiarism", influence, and derivation in the creative arts with regard to copyright laws. There's one overwrought essay by Jonathan Lethem and two regarding the controversy of Molotov man which I enjoyed much more. Check 'em out.

The Ecstasy of Influence by Jonathan Lethem. (I was gonna post it to the front page, but here's as good a place as any).

A much clearer case of photographic plagiarism would be (in old skool terms) to swipe a negative somebody else shot, make prints, and pass the prints off as your own work.

That is plagiarism. This case is not. Even if somebody decides to shoot Gary Coleman in a clown suit on a donkey, and I do the same,... [more]

MetaTalk post: you should be deleted, banned, drawn, and quartered
Before dawn, I rose and ran for miles toward a distant point in the bitter cold, wearing only a leather thong and moccasins stuffed with sand to toughen my feet. To strengthen my wind, I ran with my mouth full of water, breathing only through my nose. I jumped in the freezing river, hollering at the top of my lungs, to develop my warrior voice. Then, as the morning sun nudged over the horizon, I raced back to my hogan, covered in a rime of ice that cracked with my stride.... [more]

MeFi post: I wonder if it's in NP?
Scott Aaronson is a tool, and his article about large numbers is inaccurate. Spesifically he writes:

You might wonder why we can’t transcend the whole parade of paradigms, and name numbers by a system that encompasses and surpasses them all. Suppose you wrote the following in the biggest number contest:

The biggest whole number nameable with 1,000 characters of English text

Surely this number exists. Using 1,000

Ask MeFi post: Noisy Neighbours Require Political Manouvre
The guy opposite plays banda and ranchera really loud once of twice a week. Really loud. Maybe the other neighbors call the cops, but I don't. I drift off to a broken sleep thinking how happy that guy must be, bumping his ranchera, and reflecting that in this at least I am treating someone how I'd like to be treated.
I get these weird ranchera dreams out of this, too, so bonus.

MeFi post: Saddam sentenced to death.
This is probably a good time to review how Saddam rose to power. Americans generally know that the U.S. was friendly with Saddam during the 1980s, as a means of containing post-revolution Iran, but fewer realize how involved the CIA was in the rise of the Ba'ath party and of Hussein in particular. Saddam actually got his start as a CIA hitman.

The nation of Iraq was created as a British mandate after the defeat of the Ottoman empire in World War I. A guy named Faisal... [more]

I think of it like the game of Risk. The monkeys start in Africa, Asia, and South America. The bears start in Asia and North America, the prime starting spot really.

There are a whole lot of cows, pigs, chickens, horses, and white-tailed deer in North America that the bears get to first. That means lots of Grizzly, Brown and... [more]
