I have a hacksaw, a 2 x 4, a pile of dust, several flesh wounds, and many assurances that blocks are easy to make, but frankly things aren't going well so far. Also, my 2 x 4 actually measures 1.5 x 3.5, which has thrown all of my calculations off. Please advise.

For an informed decision on the hypoallergenic cat front - I wouldn't recommend a sphynx.

I got a rescue sphyx (a retired show cat, so he was very hairless).

He didn't have fur. He was an awesome cat personalitywise. But you know how pet foods include lots of vitamin e to make coats "shiny"? He needed a bath at least twice a week or else housedust would stick to his oily lack of coat and he would leave spots on things where he sat.... [more]

I happen to think that there is too damn much AskMe stuff on the sidebar because Jessamyn is the only admin that isn't a lazy good-for-nothing and she adds stuff to it and she hangs out in AskMe mostly and so it is mostly AskMe stuff. That being said, I think that this thread deserves a place on the sidebar because reading about a bunch of happy old people brought a smile to my face.

I like the desk threads, but for different reasons. If it was in the NYT, it'd price tag everything out and say that the "basic" desk with accessories will cost you something like $15,000 but if you spend the weekend antique hunting in Maine, you may get it for $12,000. Use a highlighter. That way it's easy to find posters or comments that you want to remember, or that you thought were useful. They make a huge variety of colors now, so it's easy to have a bunch, and you can draw a key on your profile to help you remember which color is which.

I also find it's useful to use an industrial-grade hole-punch to punch the threads for the day so that I can place them in organized notebooks. (My first few months on Metafilter weren't pretty--... [more]
