MetaTalk post: Why the gender discrepancy?
he's the first one in the history of all time to point out that white men have got it bad too.

To be fair, he's done a crackerjack job of illustrating why they often have it coming.

MetaTalk post: Asked for X, got Y (where X equals help and Y equals grief)
I have a hacksaw, a 2 x 4, a pile of dust, several flesh wounds, and many assurances that blocks are easy to make, but frankly things aren't going well so far. Also, my 2 x 4 actually measures 1.5 x 3.5, which has thrown all of my calculations off. Please advise.
posted to MetaTalk by A Long and Troublesome Lameness at 6:10 PM on June 3, 2008
When I was a child, I asked for blocks. Instead, my mother provided me with a reciprocating saw and some hardwood scraps. The gift of creativity and self-reliance was something she couldn't have purchased in any store. Sometimes, the greatest gift you can give a child is the chance to make something with their own hand and the strength to stand on their own foot.

I'm sorry this happened. You're completely within your rights to be upset, and they should make this right.

Here's what's worked for me in the past with situations like this:Call customer service, and get a supervisor.Frame the situation as "I'm a previous customer who's unfortunately got a problem with my most recent order, and I'm hoping we can work together to iron this out, because I want to keep recommending you to my friends.... MeFi post: Cats 'n' Racks
I love me some cats and I love me some cleavage, but I resent the cognitive dissonance that occurs when you put the two together.

In essence, the "YOU'RE A KITTY" part of my brain and the "HURF DURF" part of my brain are activated simultaneously and I pass out at my computer.

I think it might be a very specific form of epilepsy.

MeFi post: Fat Profits
Fuck that. Do you want the government to regulate your bed time for you as well? What kind of society will we live in when people are not considered smart enough to freely choose what they eat for lunch everyday?

I think this falls under the "poison well" analogy.

There's no reason to pass a law to tell people not to piss in their own wells. That's just common sense. Anybody who came on your land aiming to tell you... [more]

I can only speak for myself. I can only share experiences. I can't tell anyone else what to do. I didn't have a drinking problem so much as I had a thinking problem. Drink, or think. Don't drink and think.

In 1993 I spent nearly a month in an alcohol rehabilitation center. Waking after my first night in the treatment center was worse than a hangover. Through the night, the nursing staff fed me 15 tabs of Serax, an anti-withdrawal medication. When morning arrived, I was... [more]

Ask MeFi post: Why do some people wear shoes indoors?
I'm also surprised by the number of Americans who suggest that it's actually normal not to wear shoes indoors

Sure, of course it's normal. It's not that it's abnormal not to wear shoes indoors--it's just that neither is it abnormal to wear shoes indoors. We just plain old don't have the kind of hard-and-fast cultural norm concerning wearing shoes in our own homes that is so prevalent in other parts of the world.

Our world was a better place with him in it. Can you just imagine, though, somewhere on the planet right now may be a scruffy toddler who will grow up through his or her own trials to become their own sweet, strong, fearless, loving, singing version of U. For an informed decision on the hypoallergenic cat front - I wouldn't recommend a sphynx.

I got a rescue sphyx (a retired show cat, so he was very hairless).

I like the desk threads, but for different reasons. If it was in the NYT, it'd price tag everything out and say that the "basic" desk with accessories will cost you something like $15,000 but if you spend the weekend antique hunting in Maine, you may get it for $12,000.
