MeFi post: the n-word
Actually, anyone interested in this topic might do well to read "They Thought They Were Free: The Germans, 1933-45 by Milton Mayer." It was a chilling book, and what chilled me most was the utter normalcy of it all. We do like to think, as McWhorter points out, that those "good Germans" knucked under only when the jackboot was at their throat. But that wasn't how it was at all - people embraced it wholeheartedly. They accepted what they were told by the government - believing,... [more]

MeFi post: granny get your gun
Every time I've seen documentary footoage of a "knock and announce" prior to breaching a door the entire sequence happens in like maybe 3 seconds. It's KNOCK-"POLICE!"-BATTERING RAM thingy. Even if you were standing right by the front door I doubt if you would comprehend what was happening in that short amount of time. If you were in another room or sleeping all you are likely to be aware of is a loud noise and then a bunch of guys in black with guns screaming at you.... [more]

This is so terrible, I pulled out my credit card and bought a membership to MeFi, just so I could say how terrible it is. That's right: five dollars of terrible.

MeFi post: Quebecois nation
This is such crap.

-Is Charest more important than the other ministers?
-Does Quebec get it's own money?
-Does Quebec get a special veto?
-Does Quebec have undue influence in the parliament?
-Does Quebec get a seat at the UN?

The answer to all these questions is no. What do they get? They get more pissed off when they find out the only thing this will bring is a new generation of political... [more]

MeFi post: Hey, teacher, leave those kids alone!
I basically did the unschooling thing in highschool: while there was no explicit philosophy attached, I withdrew from public school and spent my days reading books, wandering around town, and getting engaged in the local art scene. I convinced my mom to let me try this unorthodox education scheme, mainly because there were no better alternatives for someone like me.

Right before I started highschool, the two of us moved to a new city. The neighborhood we were in was... [more]

MeFi post: A clever little trick to protect your passwords.
here is the PDF, which you can read without clicking through a pop-up ridden 'haxor' site.

The technique:

Navigate to the login page desired;
Type in the userid;
for (each pwd character){
Give focus to anywhere but the pwd field;
Type some random characters;
Give focus to the pwd field;
Type the next character of the... [more]

MeFi post: Teen goes nuclear
I think the way the next part goes is he uses it to power a hyperdrive he invented, and he installs it in an old train car he found out back, and he makes a spacesuit out of a wetsuit his friend's older brother outgrew, and he and his two best pals blast off to the moon and defeat the Nazis there. Right?

Damn, do I love these stories.

MeFi post: Stan Meyer and the Water Powered Car
How many times must we explain:

The damn car is not powered by water!

It is powered by a a BATT-ER-Y!!! SAY IT!! BAT-TE-RY!!! THATS RIGHT AN ELECTRICAL BATTERY THAT WAS CHARGED BY A SMOG SPEWING POWER PLANT!!!

The water is being decomposed into Hydrogen and Oxygen by a BATTERY! The gases are sparked, which causes an explosion, which makes car go forward, and water comes out exhaust pipe... and the whole process very... [more]

blacklite: Don't deceive yourself. Scientology is pernicious mind-control wrapped around a core ideology of radical and limitless self-aggrandizement. They make the Objectivists look like a social club. Just because they claim to help people and to relieve human suffering does not mean they should be taken at their word. Dig around a bit and you'll find many many stories of people describing their experiences of turning... [more]

Oookay there's a wall in front of you... still there... you're really close to the wall.. OH you ran into it and hit your head. Ooh, that hurts. You're rubbing your head now; you're gonna have a lump there tomorrow morning. Your butt is itchy. You scratch your butt.

History is written by the winners.

You haven't looked around a university history department. More often than not, history is written by the wieners.

MeFi post: Muslim UCLA student tasered for not having ID
what did he expect would happen?

I hope someone says the same thing of (and to) you next time you don't act exactly the way the cops want you to act and they beat the shit out of you, taser you, and/or lock you up and throw away the key. Brutal abuse of power is sickening but inevitable; pathetic justification of such by onlookers is, I guess, equally inevitable, but somehow I can never get used to it.

MeFi post: Crooked Knives
what are the qualities of the knife that make it so much tool -- the grip? The blade?
Both mistermoore, on the mocotagan site there is a downloadable (in chapters) book. Pages 34-39 have information on 'The Anatomy of the Mocotaugan' and 'How a Modern Master uses a Mocotaugan'.

I did something else while I waited for this to buffer, then went back to it seconds before the 3rd girl casually fell over and broke in half. Needless to say, not knowing they were mannequins caused me some alarm.

MeFi post: Are our library books safe?
The degree of supervision, indeed, is often a more eloquent class indicator than mere income, which suggests that the whole class system is more a recognition of the value of freedom than a proclamation of the value of sheer cash. The degree to which your work is overseen by a superior suggests your real class more accurately than the amount you take home from it. Thus the reason why a high-school teacher is "lower" than a tenured uni versity professor. The teacher is obliged... [more]

From a review of work by Chalres Carpenter, also linked on the site (clips two and three above):
The resulting tonality shatters everything the well-tempered Western musical ear has spent a lifetime acclimating itself to. At first, it's extremely disconcerting—the music doesn't sound "in tune," but... [more]
