Approaches to reduce AWS hosting costs
Right now, Metafilter has two major costs. One is people time, mostly for moderation, along with a single part time developer. The people time, of course, is what makes Metafilter Metafilter. We want MORE people time, not less. The other is hosting costs. This, to me, is where the lowest hanging fruit is, because there is not a single member who will be sad if we send less money to Jeff Bezos every month. This is a thread for thinking about how to reduce AWS hosting costs in the timescale of days to weeks while retaining the existing code base and maintaining existing functionality.

@elonmusk says he has "bought Twitter" in a message to advertisers and that he hopes the site doesn't "become a free-for-all-hellscape". However, according to the Guardian, "despite his use of the past tense, he did not legally own Twitter at the time of the post" although "the final paperwork is expected to be completed on Friday afternoon". It's also not certain if a specific former President's banned account will be allowed to return to the site, an event the WSJ calls "a red-line for some brands".

Speech-to-text with Whisper
Whisper, from OpenAI, is an open source tool you can run on your own computer that "approaches human level robustness and accuracy on English speech recognition"; "Moreover, it enables transcription in multiple languages, as well as translation from those languages into English." Instructions on how to download, install, and run it. (I have successfully used Whisper and the results were very good. However, it is not fast enough to run during recording of an interview and give you live captions/transcripts; it runs after the fact, on already-recorded audio.)
