How open are you to challenging the premise of attachment styles as a way to understand relationships?

There are criticisms of that approach. But I'm not sure if you'd find that helpful.

MeFi post: What we need is a Voight-Kampff test: is this real or AI?
And way back in 2008 (a decade before Fall; or, Dodge in Hell), Stephenson wrote this in Anathem:

“Early in the Reticulum-thousands of years ago-it became almost useless because it was cluttered with faulty, obsolete, or downright misleading information,” Sammann said.

“Crap, you once called it,” I reminded him.

“Yes—a technical term. So crap filtering became... [more]

Seems like a good thread to drop this: Channel1 is launching an entirely AI driven news ecosystem in 2024. They're using AI generated anchors with real news footage, and planning on "generating AI imagery to support stories where images don't exist." ArsTechnica had a writeup on it, but the 22 minute preview newscast they posted looked convincing enough.... [more]

It’s linked in the middle of the article, but I want to put an extra plug in for Gavin’s podcast series about living with a loved one with dementia: Let’s Not Be Kidding. He paints a lovely picture of his mom without glossing over the hard stuff. It’s poignant but also funny. He has great guests like Scott Thompson from Kids in the Hall and the musician Jann Arden, who talk about their own parents’ dementia journeys.

My bet is that guy just felt insulted in his masculinity that you dared to tell him that he was a scammer and not to call you, and he was threatening you because he was lashing out from his wounded ego. I doubt he'll call you; if he does, block him, and I doubt he'll call you repeatedly.

MeFi post: The SAT Question Everyone Got Wrong
I have three marks, not four.

That's covered in the video. You measured 3 solar days. But this all hinges on different interpretations of "rotation." If you count the number of times the small gear reference point touches the other gear, you get N rotations. If you count the number of times the small gear is oriented in the absolute starting position (ie the line from center to the reference point is pointing due east) you get N+1. The... [more]

It clicked for me when I noticed that's this is just like the difference between a solar day and a sidereal day.

How many times does the earth rotate in one year? It's not 365 times... it's 366 times.

...although we pretty much always say 365 times, since we usually count "sun directly overhead one day to sun directly overhead the next day" as one rotation. But that's just a wee bit more than a single rotation, as you can see if you... [more]

A frequent and long-standing rec (15 years in some cases!) among my friends who write book-length things is Scrivener, available for Mac, PC, and iOS. I'm currently about 65,000 words into a thing I originally thought was going to be 5,000 words at most, and I love the way Scrivener has helped make it easy for my brain to keep track of things like what happens where. Let me see if I've got this right. Ask MeFi post: English spelling for bilingual kids
Very similar situation here, though with a different language.

I noticed the spelling problem when I was homeschooling during the first lockdown. I bought a few workbooks aimed at the 'supplementary homework' market such as Vorderman's Spelling Made Easy titles and went through with the kids, doing just a page a day or every other day. Some of these books cover spelling rules but I didn't labour these. I took breaks between each book until they were ready for the next... [more]

If people are stealing bread to feed their families, the way to prevent that crime is to give them bread. John Winthrop, the same guy who coined the "city on a hill" language that every politician in the US is so fond of quoting, once mused that he had "cured" someone of firewood thievery by letting the accused freely take firewood from his own supply until the thief had enough to stay warm.

Even Mad Max: Fury Road, rightfully known for its spectacular practical stunts, has plenty of CGI.

Notably, they used CGI to make the vehicles wheels look like they were turning faster, making the stunts look more dangerous since they appear on screen to be moving much faster than they were. That, in my estimation, was an amaing use of CGI.

Cats were condemned by popes and massacred by entire villages and would not regain even half their former status until the Age of Enlightenment in the 18th century. The Victorian Age... [more]

Patagonia’s hemp work pants last YEARS longer than carhartt or similar canvas pant brand. They also contain no plastic. I wear two pairs in rotation, 6 days a week. I’m on year two with one pair, year three with the other. They cost $90. This amortizes to what, $3.75 and $2.50 a month. This is a pretty good deal.

Longevity counts in cost calculations, especially if you slow your fashion cycle down.
