Nicaragua's Cerro Negro is the youngest volcano in Central America. While it has a kind of stark beauty, since this record (and bone)-breaking stunt, most tourists go there for a different reason.

ahh yes, to see the guy dressed up like the horse who interrupts the fighting of the bull penises.

(Well. There's that, but also the sledding at the end of the video...)

Daryn and his crew endured a fair share of trial and error, testing everything from picnic tables to mattresses until they arrived to a sit-down, wooden toboggan, made of metal and Formica-reinforced plywood. The adventure sport was born!

Going down any hill in a toboggan made like a cheap kitchen countertop would seem to be adventure enough. Doing it in a remote part of the world far from medical attention seems like adventure overkill.

It's not that remote. It's about an hour outside of Leon, which is a decent-sized city.

Some mornings just getting out of bed and getting to the bathroom that is five feet away without accidentally, in a half sleep, lurching to the left and falling down the wooden stairs that lead to the loft, is adventure enough.

This stuff....this stuff is akin to applying to be a research subject for Darwin.

Pretty tame actually-- after a morning spent surfing the intellectual slopes of Mt. Metafilter.

But if you find yourself one day bored to tears with bags of extra bandaids standing on the side of a volcano in Nicaragua, why not try it?

It's a good thing they don't pile pretty white sand as high as ashy volcanoes. I might be tempted in that case. Well, except for the heat. Fergetaboudit.

Hmm. I Google Leon+Nicaragua+Trauma+Center and...

My friend we have very different ideas about what remote, decent-sized, and far from medical attention mean.

Eh... I got patched up for this boo-boo at the farmacia in Leon. Took 15 minutes. Though I still have some volcano dust under the skin....

The Hawaiians have been doing this as a religious ritual for centuries.

Looks just the place for some ill-prepared zorbing.

Speaking of Nicaraguan Volcanoes, Cerro Negro's big brother San Cristóbal, has been a little bit more cranky than usual. By the direction of the plume it looks like Chichigalpa has been getting a good ash covering since the recent spate of eruptions started. I hope my monthly shipment of Flor de Caña isn't affected...

He blames his plan on a village and it's explosions. I imagine that alcohol, a lack of imagination, and a critical desire for bragging rights are more likely culprits.

Seems like the real danger is how everything seems to include free beer.

I like that sledding is not limited to people in cold places.

In fact, even if you can't find anything sufficiently niveous you can still go sledding. Hooray!

Protip, from one who knows first-hand*: if you're doing this, and develop second thoughts going down too fast, using your unprotected hands as braking devices is not advisable.

* Ba dum!

The first time the camera pans down to reveal the tiny, tiny shorts was maybe the biggest surprise I got out of that video.

Because snow is too fluffy.

I take umbrage at your title; like kittens, snow can never be too fluffy.

Glad I hiked it before the boarders invaded the place.
