Pitchfork: "A few weeks ago, 4AD confirmed that musician Scott Walker and drone metal outfit Sunn O))) would release a collaborative album. Today, the two parties have announced that album. It's called Soused, and it's due out September 22 in Europe and 23 in North America."

"According to a press release, Sunn O))) approached Walker about appearing on their excellent 2009 album Monoliths & Dimensions. Walker declined, but in 2013, he approached them with new music he'd written specifically for a collaboration. Soused is five tracks and 50 minutes long."

Awesome. Love Walker's voice, but find his music not really to my taste. Love Sunn 0))) all the way through.

Forgot previous Sunn O)))

Hah sunno the smokiest band I ever seen. At least three smoke machines going full blast - when we left the venue it looking like there was a fire from all the smoke coming out the doors.

I am still not convinced that Sun0))) is not an elaborate performance art piece meant to take the piss out of self-serious metal subcultures not unlike Velvet Cocoon did with Black Metal. Coincidentally, Velvet Cocoons catalog was re-released on Southern Lord, the label of SunnO))) mastermind O'Malley.

For a much more listenable sludge experience with O'Malley, check out his pre-SunnO))) band Thorr's Hammer.

I guess I respect Scott Walker for his artistic integrity & forging his own path & eschewing the pursuit of The Almighty Dollar, & etc., but man—it's kind of like if Johnny Cash spent the last 20 years of his career making Alvin and the Chipmunks records.

If so, Earth kind of spoiled the joke by a few years...

When I first heard the music Sun O))), I was fascinated, and filled with dread…the music was portentous, like some evil psychedelic prophecy, or an echo of the post-9/11 zeitgeist...a harbinger of the Apocalypse, or a soundtrack to something maybe even worse. It was good, but in a really *bad* way…that kind of darkness isn’t really my thing, so it made me uneasy, really uneasy…and yet I still felt compelled to listen, whenever it came up on the radio...

Then I saw a video of them performing the robes, and breathed a huge sigh of relief…they have a sense of humor, apparently...

The lyrics of "My Wall" confirm this.

I feel the disappointment of going from Scott 3/4 to his new stuff, but even the old stuff had something truly twisted lurking underneath.

I can't say I've made it through The Drift or Bish Bosch, but Tilt had enough melody to understand where he's coming from. I love the title track, it's like a country song turned inside-out, the bloodied intestines sputtering something soulful.

I like a lot of weird metal shit but man I just cannot get into Sunn. IMO drone done right (like Boris) can be absolutely killer. What am I missing?

And people really think Earth is just a performance art piece? For reals??

Hey, other folks who don't know and are sure this must be some kind of a joke, Scott Walker is apparently a musician and not the Wisconsin Governor.

This isn't really too outlandish of a collaboration, just an amazing one. Scott 3 is one of my favorite albums that is loaded with tons of dissonant and droning passages, amongst some really great orchestral elements and Scott Walker's crooning vocals.

I don't know much about SunnO))), and nothing about this Walker guy, but skimming this news and this thread is a lot more fun if you imagine their collaborator to be the other Scott Walker.

I think I was the only one to claim anything related to Earth, and my point was that either them and Sunn 0)))))))))))))))))[times infinity] being called performance art (or at least "performance art, as opposed to METAL") was kind of goofy, or there was some serious misunderstanding going on. Apologies if that wasn't clear.

You know what would have been really great though is Scott Walker + Khanate, though I guess actually some of his most recent album isn't too far from what that might have been like.

All this Scott O))) talk has me revisiting Lulu - here's a stellar outtake that didn't make it on the LP.
