Holey felines, Catman!

Stray Cats Are Having The Best Time Playing In These Holes: Nyan Kichi is a Japanese photographer who dedicates his time to hanging out with and photographing stray cats. The cats have come to know and love him, and love to jump around and show off for him — especially in one particular spot that has a lot of drain pipe holes. Also: bleps, butts, and lots of leaping.
Roll that beautiful toe bean footage!

Yes, good contortionist kitties.
Does Japan do trap, neuter, release programs? Cause this seems a perfect location for that. I have not actually RTFA yet. Was v. busy looking at instagram cat pictures.

No, not really, although more awareness of the issue seems to be developing. ARK is a group based in Kobe that does spearhead some of these projects, but the scale of the problem is far beyond what ARK can handle.
An acquaintance of mine works at a university, and he single-handedly operates a trap, neuter and release program. People tend to dump strays on the university campus, where they form colonies. Students, teachers and staff feed the cats in these colonies, but as you might expect, life is wretched for the cats.
He's set up traps for the cats, and will take them to the vet if he can, but the buildings and maintenance managers are opposed to his efforts, and will remove the traps if the can. He also sets up little cardboard houses for the cats in the winter (it is quite wet and snowy there), and these are removed as well. All the while strays are dumped on the university.
He's even gone so far as to rent a house for some strays that have been spayed/neutered and generally brought back to health by a vet. He's very very devoted, but it's literally his mission in life.
There are colonies of cats all over the place in Japan. I lived near a large supermarket and there was a colony based in its waste and recycling area. The cats would unfortunately congregate on our property to breed and to fight. I don't know why, but we also seemed to attract a lot of wasps ("Oh, your property has always attracted various creatures," said our neighbors).
