Comedian Charlie Murphy, Brother of Eddie, Dies at 57 [The New York Times] “Charlie Murphy, the older brother of Eddie Murphy and a comic performer in his own right who turned encounters with Rick James and Prince into standout sketches on "Chappelle's Show," has died. He was 57. Murphy died Wednesday in New York of leukemia, according to his representative, Domenick Nati. He was perhaps best-known for his appearances on Dave Chappelle's Comedy Central show. In the recurring segment "Charlie Murphy's True Hollywood Stories," Murphy would recount how his brother's fame brought him into the orbit of the biggest stars. His versions of the experiences, played out by him, Chappelle and others, became enduring hits.”

Charlie was a co-writer on Vampire in Brooklyn, which I don't think I've seen since it was in theatres but is streaming on Amazon Prime in the US right now.

Too young. I just hope he's somewhere shooting hoops with Prince.

It's pretty sad to think that Murphy, Prince, and James are now all gone, all of them untimely deaths.

God, that man was funny. I'd have paid $50 a pop to hear more of his True Hollywood Stories.

As great as Chappelle is, one of the things that sustained the show over the years were Charlie's sketches - I'd say most people who watched the show later on did it because someone shared either Prince or Rick James bits, and... Shit, they're both two of the best sketches I've seen. The still believable storylines mixed with the OTT details (including Chappelle's impressions) and Charlie's storytelling make them so so great I never got tired of watching them.

I can't even imagine how difficult it would be to carve out your own path with Eddie Murphy as your brother, and yet I think he really did. That's a huge shadow to escape.

It's worthy of note that with Chappelle's help, he managed to turn his name into a catch phrase.
