Yeah, I know what you mean, the few details I've read aren't pretty. She was so much a part of our childhoods if you are of a certain age.

This news made me think back to watching the Happy Days 30th anniversary special in 2005. ABC got Gary Marshall and the whole cast back together in the Arnold's diner set. There were two things from that event I remember well. The first is that Gary Marshall didn't understand what 'Jumping the Shark' actually meant. The second was how terribly uncomfortable Erin Moran was to be there. Seriously, she was crying.

I don't know more about her than what I read in obituaries, but I hope she managed to get herself in a better place.

This is the second time this month where I have actually thought, "oh man, I feel like I should say something about this on MetaFilter, but I will wait and see if jonmc does it instead, because he really should". Thank you, jon.

True story: Erin Moran, as Joanie, was the first person to say the word nerd on television.

I'm having some difficulty stomaching Baio's "tribute" to Moran given his attitude towards her back when she was alive and struggling.

l really have fond memories of watching Happy Days back n the 70s; the cast really worked well together. Sorry to hear that Ms. Moran hadn't been doing well since then. She really seemed to just disappear. Good for Henry Winkler for trying to help her out.

I never liked Chachi anyway. He seemed like someone from a later era that was brought in in a desperate attempt to freshen up the show.

It's quite possible he was just feeling defensive about being pursued by some hack about an old colleague who'd fallen on hard times, and felt like he had to give some justification for his desire not to comment.

Maybe he's a monster, maybe he just said something that could be interpreted as callous. I don't know. I do know that life is far too short to spend it judging the unknowable shortcomings of people we haven't even met.

I'm not the biggest fan of Chach these days, but given entertainment journalism he may have been making his statement without any (or hardly any) context. Have you seen the questions that TMZ barks out at celebrities? I can imagine, "Hey Scott, Erin hasn't worked in awhile. How do you feel about that?" as he's walking out of a restaurant for his daughter's Xth birthday or something.

He seemed like someone from a later era that was brought in in a desperate attempt to freshen up the show.

Which totally worked ratings-wise, for a few years.

Scott Baio is a moron:
“I’m OK, a little shocked but not completely shocked that this happened. My thing is, I feel bad because her whole life, she was troubled, could never find what made her happy and content. For me, you do drugs or drink, you’re gonna die. I’m sorry if that’s cold, but God gave you a brain, gave you the will to live and thrive and you gotta take care of yourself.”
But then there's this :
Monday morning, the Harrison County Coroner’s Office and Sheriff’s Department issued a joint statement saying Moran passed due to complications with her stage 4 cancer. The statement added there were no illegal narcotics found at the scen.

The thing I remember is the optics of the opening montage of the first show aired. The was a quick flash of Ms. Moran wearing mouseketeer ears. She was the perfect image of a genuine 50's child, 50's in a way that all the other characters were only sketched-in pastiches of.

“How do you help somebody that doesn’t want to help themselves? You try a couple of times and if they don’t want the help, I gotta go, sorry.”

Wow.

Granted, there's a lot that we don't know about this story, and it's not up to Scott to have saved Erin, but that's a pretty callous lack of compassion for someone who was in the exact same position he was in life (and the only other person who was), and there but for the Grace of God goes Scott Baio.
