There's a big rubber dong in these pictures. (h/t Dangerous Minds)

Technically, there's a big rubber dong in every picture, if you look at it just right.

(Well, sometimes you have to buy it a drink or two.)

These just aren't big enough. The photos, I mean.

Thank you. For me, personally, this has just justified the existence of Instagram, which I was otherwise pretty confused about.

Clicked from here to an unrelated tab which displayed a photo with a bald man in the background, and I can confirm rokusan's statement.

And sometimes it offers you a drink.

Is there a way to make the pictures bigger? Or is instagram devoted to tiny little pictures?

If you have a recent version of the Instagram app you can zoom in on photos using a two-finger/pull outward gesture.

Or just shift and mousewheel.

sotonohito, if you're on an actual computer, click a picture and it pops up to a larger size.

Kind of like... well, anyway.

Some pictures actually contain all the big rubber dongs.

Where's Waldo

I'm glad to see that Wikipedia has an extensive list of localised names for Wally/Waldo. Pertinent to the current discussion, in Afrikaans and Norwegian, you're looking for Willie or Willy.

The Mets got in on this accidentally.

I gave this a 50/50 chance of being just a picture of Matt Harvey.

I'm on an actual computer, and clicking made it fill maybe 1/4 of my screen. Instagram is, apparently, optimized for 640x480 displays or something.

(Instagram has been around since 2010, on the web since 2012. They have around 700 million 30-day users, according to the latest stats. Not sure why you folks are behaving like it's some kind of newfangled thing you just learned about... :-)

OMG, that's practically prehistoric.

They say on a website designed when ColdFusion was popular, with linear comment history, html markup, and general prohibition on images.

More seriously, in 2010 I had a Nokia linux smartphone and instagram was not an option. By the time I switched to Android, they were already owned by Facebook. I just got a pretty nice 1080p display laptop and now everything is tiny by default. I'm sure the mobile UI makes sense with pinch to zoom, but for whatever reason, on my laptop browser I see a 1080x1080 picture crammed into a 598x598 box.

This reminds me of that reflectoporn fad that hit eBay in the early twenty-oughts. (Standard NSFW disclaimers apply.)

Meant it more as "they've been doing their thing for quite some time, and pretty much everyone you know is using them, so this thread is a strange place to discover how things work."

(but ok, MetaFilter noticed potential problems at the very beginning, because MetaFilter, so guess this is just more of the same.)
