Is this to be the last season, or is there more to come? I'm kinda out of the fandom loop here.

7 episodes this summer, 6 next year. That's it, unless the spinoffs take off.

I believe there's one more season after this one, but I'm also a little out of the loop, so they might have changed that since it was announced.

I like the show a lot, but really loved the second wave trailers they've done for the last few seasons. The first trailer is usually one with some maudlin, overwrought song. Then comes the second wave which gets to the real heart of what's occurring in the seasons and that are so spot on.

AM HYPED.

Im missing that Springtime GOT feeling. I'm damn excited for it but I don't love the idea of a new summer timeslot.
And I wish they'd just merge them together for one final season. This short season bullshit is annoying.

This short season bullshit is annoying.

Supposedly it's because they're spending roughly the same amount of money on everything, which requires more time

13 episodes to tie up everything?

Too fast.

I think the rest of the story is figuring who the real menace is (white walkers, no surprise) and joining together to battle them. Sam's off in the far south at that library, so there's probably been someone in Westoros who's working for or with the White Walkers. Out that person, the "heroes" bump heads a few times, then come together to fight off the Walkers (Bran probably plans a big part here). At least one of the dragons will be killed and taken over by the night king. Cersei is the loose cannon who will probably try to turn again everyone else at someone point. Because Cersei.

Roll credits.

So it's tight, but doable. I fully expect not to truly satisfied with how they'll leave some character threads, but there you go.

I've been looking forward to this season; I have no idea how my brain will manage watching Game of Thrones while the real world finds itself being undone by a political situation that makes Westerosi politics seem comparatively stable, pleasant, and clean.

You're probably right, Brandon the Blatcher. I forget sometimes that the show has like 20% of the book's characters and plots going on, so maybe there really is a lot less tie up and it's not as complex as I imagine.

And unless the trailer is lying to us, it looks like this mini-season is Fight All Humans, which leaves next mini-season for Fight All Undead, and then the Chromatics play over the end credits in a dive bar.

Yeah, that works.

(But James was never cool.)

Jon Brodkin, Ars Technica: AT&T’s purchase of HBO could lead to 20-minute Game of Thrones episodes [for mobile devices]
As AT&T prepares to purchase Time Warner Inc., AT&T CEO Randall Stephenson has an idea for HBO's Game of Thrones: cut the hour-long episodes down to 20 minutes for mobile devices.

AT&T's $85.4 billion purchase of Time Warner would give the telco HBO and other lucrative programming properties. Stephenson discussed his thoughts yesterday at the annual JP Morgan Technology, Media, and Telecom conference in Boston.

“I’ll cause [HBO CEO Richard] Plepler to panic,” Stephenson said. But “think about things like Game of Thrones. In a mobile environment, a 60-minute episode might not be the best experience. Maybe you want a 20-minute episode.” Instead of showing full-length episodes on all devices, it might be best to "curate the content uniquely for a mobile environment."
Am trying to think of a scenario where I want to watch GoT on a mobile, and in 20 minute chunks.
posted by ZeusHumms at 5:55 AM on May 25, 2017

Yeah, I just don't think he's actually going to finish the series anymore. I think a combination of the zeitgeist changing, so what he's writing isn't against it anymore, and with the internet ruining all his plot twists, let alone the series, I just don't think he has any more motivation to finish.

GoT is a very visual show, like Better Call Saul and Breaking Bad, whose show creators/ producers strongly suggested that viewers watch it on something larger than a phone screen, because so much detail is lost on smaller screens.

On the flip side, if a user is more engaged, the video quality matters less (PDF, 12 page academic paper). I'm not sure how that factors for GoT.

That quote's been all over the web lately, but taken way out of context, in no small part because Stephenson botched his explanation rather badly.

His point isn't that literal Game of Thrones episodes, or episodes of a show like GoT, would ever be 20 minutes. His point is that he's pushing a mobile-centric future media model , and of course nobody will want to watch 60-minute epics on their phones, and so smaller, shorter, cheaper shows will blossom.

Rather than another GoT, he was asking creators to consider thinking ahead to 20-minute, small-screen, small-budget projects that could flourish as, you know, shows to watch on the subway.

But of course "20-minute Game of Thrones episodes!!!" makes better lazy headlines.
