I wish I had the kind of unfettered hope in my heart that Kristian WithaK must have had in order to send such an email. I mean, the response rate has got to be reckoned at 'kind of low', even optimistically.

Real talk: when the print screen came down I tried holding the tab key to check for easter eggs. It doesn't work on youtube. Old habits die hard.

At this point the challenge might be explaining sbemails to kids these days, the original main audience is like 35-45 now.

Oooooh
Lappier

Would that be a Pentium 4?

farlukar: Considering how up-to-date Compy tends to be with their products, a Pentium ][ would be a stretch for the Lappier.

Well I fired up the old flash player for this and the only thing happening is the Couch Z bit when you click the "F Folds" thingy.

The P4 is about as old now as the 486 when Lappy got introduced; but then again: yeah, it's Compy.

My daughter bought a computer for college this week and named it "Lappy 486." I've never been so proud a parent.

(Then we had The Talk. "The 486 was an Intel microprocessor used to play Duke Nukem 3D about three years before you were born. The chip in your new computer uses the same instruction set so that the DMV can keep using the same software they had when I got my driver's license.")

Enough of that talk. At the place I worked during 2001-01 there was at least a dozen of us (then between the ages of 25 and 45) for whom Homestar Runner was the primary in-office entertainment. There's no age barrier to loving Homestar Runner, only the interference of a condescending peer group.

straight: Duke Nukem 3D? My 486 couldn't handle Duke Nukem 3D unless you shrank the screen down to the size of a postage stamp. (Admittedly, I had a 33Mhz 486DX at the time.)

Now, Doom, on the other hand, it could play like a champ.

I assume the Lappier uses an artisanal small-batch processor, like a Crusoe.
posted by ckape at 11:55 AM on August 15, 2017 [1 favorite]

My impression was that most people played Doom on 386s that they wished were 486s and Duke3D on 486s they wished were Pentiums.

Ah, the Cyrix 486DLC...

Anyway, whatever's inside Lappier, let's hope it can handle some more e-mail in the near future.
