What an extremely excellent post full of stubby lil goodness.

My favorites are the pups who, when the starting gate opens, just sort of wander around in circles near the start.

the circular wanderers, aka my people.

So for some reason my eyes were having trouble focusing and I kept on mashing up this thread with the one up above it, about the first US offensive in WWI. And the headline read “100 Years Ago the First National Corgi...”

And I was like, what a long and noble history of Corgi racing.

My family used to race our Jack Russell Terriers at the local terrier trials occasionally when I was a kid, and I was confused as to why the Corgis were all circling round the cages because that never happened with the JRTs--you might have a dog who left the gates and immediately started to try and scratch off the mandatory racing muzzle, but by and large they took off like fuzzy little dervishes. I couldn't figure out why the Corgi response was so anemic.

And then I realized that the Corgis were being asked to run to their humans calling their name instead of chasing after the squirrel tail or bit of rabbit fur on a string that the terriers used to chase after, which of course is a far inferior reward as far as most of the dogs I know are concerned. Heh. I think the moving lure is more exciting to a lot of dogs, so you wind up with something like this lure chasing Corgi running her fool heart out instead. Look at that floof!

Might I just highlight my personal favorites, the corgis with passengers? Here's one with a cowboy, and another with a jockey.

I only caught it in the background of the final photo in the linked gallery, but SoCal Corgi Nation replaces the bear in the California flag with a corgi, and it's ADORABLE.

That led me to googling California flag but with dog which had a couple good other examples, but not nearly enough.

I laughed so hard at the confused corgis wandering around--they're so cute and bewildered!

Sciatrix, because we have a JRT too, I went down a rabbit hole of JRT racing videos on YouTube one day and they are the polar opposite of the corgi race! Those dogs mean BUSINESS.

My favorites are the ones where the course takes a sharp turn and one of the dogs mistakes the fence for a hurdle and sails straight over it. Occasionally you'll see one of them seriously wipe out on a hurdle in the youtube videos--not something I ever saw in real life, but you can see why you'd video it--and they just flip back up on their little feet and pretend nothing happened in their quest for the lure.

I love them so much. If my spouse wouldn't kill me for bringing home another JRT, man... (I'm holding out for a rat terrier for my own next dog, a good solid ways in the future. As far as I can tell, they seem a lot like JRTs but a little more biddable and perhaps a touch quieter.)

Oh there are so many comedy gold moments in those videos. I saw one where there was a little opening they were supposed to go into at the end of the race but the dog in the lead totally missed the opening and BONK ran into the wall!

And good plan on the rat terrier. I love our JRT but when he's excited? The barking. Oh the barking.
