El País photo-essay of indigenous women skaters in Cochabamba, Bolivia I always enjoy reading/watching people find that certain thing that brings them a little joy in life... spotted on Deb Cachras twitter feed, a fantastic slideshow of Bolivian indigenous women skaters. Related from October 2020 - Bolivian Women Skateboard in Aymara Garb to Showcase Culture and related video from the AP story.

This is very cool. Thanks!

(The old person in me can't help but wonder if one could make a culturally appropriate version of a protective knee pad. . . but, then, some things are worth knee injuries.) [edit: I see that one of the group in the first link agrees with me.]

This is awesome.
For context: a few decades ago, the wife of a Bolivian government official, who was indigenous and wore the traditional Aymara clothes, was made to stand aside in line at the bank and let all the white people through before they'd service her. She went back a while later with a camera crew and raised a shit show, but the only reason anybody cared was because she was the wife of said government official.

I wonder to what extent Vans get interwoven in indigenous garb? They certainly follow skate culture, it seems. It's always interesting to me to how how this sort of thing cross pollinates.

2N2222, you can still order custom Vans shoes. I'd love to see some Bolivian patterns.
