What about light metal, as exemplified by The Warlord and the Bishop? (I must admit I've never quite understood the bit, but Stephen Fry as the naughty bishop belting out Hard-Headed Woman is a glorious thing.)

No Yacht Metal? I mean, there's Pirate Metal, but I assume that's an advanced progression of Yacht Metal after you get boarded.

Now I'm picturing a genre of Yacht Rock where the song suddenly stops and after a scuffle becomes a pirate shanty...

Nevermind the hairsplitting over genre, what really bugs me about htis video is the apparently random order the genres are presented in. Surely you'd arrange them in some sort of chronological order?
posted by davidwitteveen at 6:26 PM on August 4, 2023 [2 favorites]

- I guess it looks as if you're reorganizing your records. What is this though? Chronological?
No...
- Not alphabetical...
Nope...
- What?
Autobiographical.

I think there is some kind of clustering going on when it comes to organization

In case you haven't seen it yet, I highly recommend multi-hyphenate Dave Hill's Black Metal Dialogues.

Beatles are Raga Rock?! I mean there’s no entry for Rock and Roll. And Nick Lowe, I love him for 45 years, but Pub Rock has to be Rockpile.
posted by billsaysthis at 10:07 PM on August 4, 2023

I'd argue some of the assignments if I cared but some of you seem to be missing that the labels are being assigned to specific recordings, not to the entire oeuvre of those bands whose tracks were selected to provide well-known examples.
> I mean there’s no entry for Rock and Roll
The video literally begins by citing "Johnny B. Goode" as an example of the "Rock and Roll" genre.

Pink Floyd isn't space rock

Depends on which era of Pink Floyd you are talking about. Early Pink Floyd albums are definitely examples of space rock.

However much I like NoMeansNo, in my list Victims Family gets that label slapped onto them, if any.

Ha! Yes, Victims Family could take the Jazz Punk throne and I’m pretty sure the NoMeansNo guys would be happy to let them take it.

P.S. Serendipitously enough I was just looking at an old Victims Family shirt in my closet a week or two ago.

Yarr, I do believe that mighty scalawag Booty Collins walks the planks connecting Pirate Metal, Funk Metal, Psychedelic Funk and Arrr & B.

Also no mention of Hardcore Oompah, a personal favorite.

I suspect you're joking, but now I really want to hear some Hardcore Oompah!

Also, today's Guardian has this:"Two doom metal bands, Arð and Pantheïst, recently performed at Huddersfield town hall – accompanied by the venue’s imposing 1860 Father Willis organ. The Organic Doom gig was so successful that they plan to repeat the performance around the UK. But the collaboration is about more than just making beautiful music – the hope is that events like these will help save some of the nation’s pipe organs from destruction."

Is shock rock its own distinct genre or a performance style with a lineage that runs throughout rock subgenres? Manson *sounds* like pretty straightforward industrial rock with occasional deviations. Grindcore lyrics - when discernible - tend towards shocking subject matter as a rule and I remember Lou Reed having to answer an interview question that was essentially "why do you write about distasteful things all of the time?"
posted by Selena777 at 1:28 PM on August 7, 2023

The Cure insists they are not gothic rock and Meshuggah insist they are not djent. That said, I think both bands are wrong.
