The last song of the last show

Japanese band Number Girl played their last show on November 30, 2002, performing "Omoide In My Head" as their final song. The bittersweet finale was captured on video and you can hear the crowd let out their last scream for the band. 20 years later, Number Girl played the song again for the first time in front of an audience and it feels just as ephemeral.

You've reminded me of Harvey Danger, who played "The Show Must Not Go On" - probably the best song they wrote - only once, on the last song of their last live show at the Crocodile in Seattle. Odd coincidence, today is the 14th anniversary of that show.

These are great videos, both the old and the new one. There's a lot of raw emotion in 2003 front row, people watching their favourite band play for the last time. It's sad and beautiful.

God, I love that jangly Telecaster sound.

Someone get this tune to David Gedge. It’s perfect for the Wedding Present to cover.

Oh wow! I'm a huge sucker for the whole Heavy-but-Melodic-but-Noisy-but-Tight sound. Reminds me a lot of the Pixies, always one of my favs. Thanks for turning me on to them!

I've been doing a deep dive into Japanese culture for a few years now, and it seems like every few days I have same reaction: "How did I possibly not know about this incredible music/food/movie/art??"

What is wrong with me? And what is wrong with the cultural environment I live in that it took me so long to find out how limited it was? Why are so many of us in the west so cut off and blind to it all, utterly unaware of this amazingly rich, deep, expansive universe of stuff? And what else is out there that I am completely missing out on?

I don't think I'm close-minded or sheltered or something. I've traveled abroad more than the average person, and I enjoy new and different experiences. So how did this happen? I haven't really figured it out yet.

It makes me feel provincial and ignorant, but at the same time thrilled and excited to discover a world of experiences I've never known.
