Australia's oldest-known platypus living in the wild discovered in a Melbourne creek. The discovery of a 24-year-old wild platypus gives researchers and conservationists a greater insight into the longevity of one of Australia's most unique animals.

Interesting stuff! I was especially intrigued by the apparent suggestion that a capacity for longevity could make it easier for individuals to survive disasters like the Millennium Drought:
Dr Serena said longevity in the platypus appeared to be an adaptive pattern that allowed them to continue to get through tough times.

"Because they have this capacity to live for a long period of time when conditions are right, they can survive," she said.

Do I read correctly that they calculated it was 24 years old because it had been released with a tag on it, 24 years ago?
