I just tried it for myself, going here and scrolling back through the last 5 or so cartoons, removing whatever's in Garfield's thought bubble.
It doesn't seem surrealist at all... in fact, it just makes it a much better strip (not that that's saying much, of course). It seems most of the obnoxiousness of the strip lies in the redundancy of whatever's in Garfield's bubble.
