Morse code was one of those things that Boy Scouts got me very interested in, but like any other language/communications platform, the effort-of-entry/payoff wasn't a good enough ratio.
If the government rounded up metafiltarians and locked us up in building with cinder block walls and exposed plumbing pipes... how many of us would be able to understand morse code rather than bang on the walls/pipes and scream until hoarse "shut the bloody fuck up!"

Damn. I passed my 20WPM test when I was 11, but I'd be lucky to do 10 now.
effigy2000: morse code has a space of a dash's worth between characters and three dash's worth between words- they don't all get run together.
I also found it funny how it's an "English to Morse converter". No French or German allowed.
If people are interested in learning morse code, I found a trove of Morse stuff here, but rumor has it the FCC got rid of all the Morse requirements for a ham radio license. I don't know if that means the start of ham radio's Endless September or if it's a last-ditch effort to keep things going as hams slowly die out. posted by dunkadunc at 6:41 AM on March 20, 2009
