Memo to self: do NOT look at medical/surgical photo websites while eating breakfast.

Bloody Disgusting really bothers the shit out of me. I read it out of a kind of necessity because it's so popular and therefor runs a lot of exclusives, but god damn the writing is awful. They routinely misspell words and give fraudulent details. I think it just goes with the territory of horror news sites though. They're all run like a geocities page controlled by a hyperactive teenager.

They seem to have left out Space Ghetto and most of the 2ch derived websites.

Roman, Bloody-Disgusting is basically a hobby version of E! for grossout pics instead of celebs. They probably don't put much attention into the copy because they know people aren't going there to read.

Also, any list of n most disgusting websites which does not including rotten, ogrish, consumptionjunction, or any of their ilk can be said to have an elitism problem at best.

Seconding localroger. I mean, they've got The Poop Report but don't have Ogrish? One of the single most important journalistic websites for Americans interested in seeing what war is really like? Beaucoup lame.

Eff disgusting, this human body stuff is AWESOME! I'm going through the pathology site and can't wait to go and watch me some surgeries!

(This comment brought to you by the girl who watches "The Autopsy Channel" while eating dinner.)

PS: If you want to actually gross me out, post a website full of dirty dishes full of other dirty dishes. Why can't people rinse their dishes before putting them in the sink? Eeeeeewwwwwww.

Much better for grossing out your friends: have them google "zit popping videos."
posted by PhoBWanKenobi at 6:45 AM on August 15, 2009

ZOMG. Yeah, the video for "World's Largest Zit" - I can't explain why I've seen it, but I've seen it.

It involves a spoon. *shudders*

I used to work in a Pathology lab. I found it pretty interesting, but my husband had a pretty strict "No talking about work at the dinner table" policy. My favorite story is not so much gross, but pretty weird. We once got a specimen cup full of foreign bodies: bits of coins, nails, wadded up paper, string, and random other debris. After carefully washing off and categorizing all of it, we checked the report to find that this had all been removed from the patient's elbow.

Thankfully, they left out a few obvious choices.

Yay! The Internet Pathology thingy! My mom (a pathologist) introduced me to that site back when it started, possibly thinking that I might want a career in pathology (she also kept inviting me to observe autopsies). Anyway, if you want serious squick-out, you need to look at the Forensic Pathology section. Look for anything that says "blunt force injury."

OH HOLY HELL. The Forensic Pathology link includes a gun shot wound to the head. OF A BABY.

I am now disgusted. By humanity.

I would have thought the very most obvious choice would have been rotten.com. No, I won't link to it. You'll just have to cut and paste.

aha! the pathology site has a picture of endometrial hyperplasia, which is either the same pic i found about 11 years ago or one with a substantially similar description when i was researching my own hyperplasia.

it was the phrase "lush fronds of hyperplastic endometrium" that really caught my attention. my response was pretty much "LUSH FRONDS? I HAVE 'LUSH FRONDS'??"

more seriously, i'm a big fan of pathology content online as a way to conceptualize one's own medical condition.

Ogrish is gone? That place used to be the top 10 most disgusting all by itself. (googles....tap tap tap tap). Ok, yeah, the level of those guys obsession indicated they weren't likely to just drop it and take up gardening, they are at uncoverreality about which I issue the maximum possible warning.
Also mayhem.net where you can see "Mass murderer Richard Speck's jailhose video. See him snort coke, roll a joint, wear blue panties, count money and show off his new tits."

You have been warned.

I clicked over to Bloody-Disgusting to find a picture of Mila Jovovich. I wasn't grossed out.

This list looks like a pretty tame (read: generally publishable) gross-out list for those with more conservative sensibilities. Browsing a more honest list would probably induce vomiting way too much to be read anywhere but in the bathroom. I suppose one should strive for a middle ground as most people would probably complain about seeing suicide, ukranian snuff films, or child rape over their Cheerios in the morning.

Any truly wrong or disgusting site will usually appear only after it's wikipedia page on google search, i.e. people link the wikipedia page far more often than they link the site itself.

Heh.

This post is kind of like wandering into a pain factory and saying, "hey guys! I just figured out that if I stub my toe, it really hurts! That's some real pain there, isn't it?" When everything's said and done, you'll probably discover that your notion of real pain was somewhat limited, but by then, you'll probably wish you hadn't brought it up.

I'm wondering what the top ten would be for nurses, nursing auxiliaries and medics (and the like)? Because with the exception of a couple of the creepy crawly pictures that was all either 'meh' or 'ooh, isn't that interesting? I've never seen one of those before!'. Some of the forensic pathology pics gave me pause for sympathy for the victim, but not disgust.

Oh yes, and I'm currently eating my breakfast. Definitely not gross if I'm still eating.

Awesome links!

I just finished my first anatomy and physiology course, so the histology slides are really interesting to look at -- now that I actually know what I'm looking at. My instructor works with the forensic unit locally, and the autopsy/pathology perspective has been fascinating, especially when we were learning and working with bones.

My mom used to work in a pathology lab at a hospital, was friends with pathologists, and that sort of thing came up at the dinner table a lot. It's amazing what you can get totally inured to while eating.

I genuinely enjoy pathology books, reports, pictures and things. If the sheer extra amount of schooling didn't concern me, I think going into pathology would be really fascinating. Actually, this post inspires me to look at what it takes to be a pathologist right now ..
