I Love How You Love Me

Over the last few months, a YouTube user has been uploading individual tracks from a 1998 Elf Power/Neutral Milk Hotel concert at NYC's Knitting Factory.

Meanwhile, another individual has uploaded most of Jeff Mangum's solo set at Jittery Joe's (Previously). Unfortunately, there's no playlist, so you'll have to manually search his uploads for "Mangum".

I've never heard of this dude, and so far I'm not really into it, but let's do this right, shall we? I don't know what the track order is, but these are the songs:

Engine
A Baby For Pree/Glow
Naomi
Gardenhead
I Love How You Love Me
Two Headed Boy part II
Two Headed Boy
Jesus Christ / Up and Over We Go

(Oops - I may not know the track order, but obviously "Two Headed Boy part II" should probably go after "Two Headed Boy." Sorry.)

...I have absolutely no idea why I didn't think of that. Thanks.

(You didn't think of it, probably, because Youtube's interface/linking is atrocious. You can't just go to the videos the way you had them to get those links. The only way to get unique per-video links from videos on an individual's profile like that is to go to each video and click the tiny "View comments, related videos, and more" link. No, it doesn't make any damned sense, but I think Youtube wants to encourage people not to leave these profile pages for some reason. Note to Youtube: sense-making with the internet is preferred.)

(Also, I'm pretty sure I have the order of the tracks exactly backwards up above there.)

koeselitz, thanks for your help. I don't recommend making this your introduction to NMH, but I'd listen to a copy of In The Aeroplane Over The Sea, then On Avery Island, then settle down for some mourning that there isn't any more where that came from.

Pretty inspired FPP-positioning, on purpose or not.

Baby cooing during "Engine" qualifies as a magical moment.

Yeah, I've heard of Neutral Milk Hotel, but I've always avoided them solely because they have a hideously awful band name. But that's really no reason to avoid a band ("Beatles," right?) so I should give them a try. I will check that album out on your recommendation, imperium. Thanks.

Totally on purpose. I was going to drop an offhanded "Holland, 1945" reference in the thread, decided to link to a video just in case, realized this set has never been posted here and, well, there you go.

God, what a great performance that Jittery Joe's show must have been. Thanks for the post (and the expansion on the content, koeselitz).

I've got a copy of Live at Jittery Joe's. The track list is as here. The CD also has a really wobbly video of much of the show.

I saw them in Manchester when they played with Sparklehorse - in about 1996 I think. Finest thing I've ever witnessed.

That was me about two years ago. I'd heard of NMH, but never heard them, and didn't understand the level of praise they got here on MeFi. I finally broke down and gave ITAOTS a listen, and became an instant convert. For a few weeks I listened to t'hat disk over and over constantly and my then-girlfriend (now wife) got hooked as well. On Avery Island' is a different beast but just as powerful and awe-inspiring.
So I guess I owe thanks to MeFi for turning me on to this, and if you all have any other suggestions of great music that may have slipped under my radar...I'm all ears.

You can't just go to the videos the way you had them to get those links

Click on the time in the lower right to go straight to the watch page. Clicking on the main image plays it on the channel page, but clicking on the lower right of the thumbnail, where the time is displayed, will do what you want.

(I just code here, I don't do UI design :) )

Well, shit, there goes Tuesday evening. I was just listening to In the Aeroplane... for about the 67,000th time the other day in the car, with all those lovely moments where it makes you temporarily forget how to breathe.

We saw them on this tour, in Providence. A small venue but pretty packed and everyone on their feet. Cool to see the set again.

koeselitz, my experience with NMH is that much of it is pretty ok the first time you hear it but if you set up a scenario where you hear the songs several times then they become addictive, I think because of Mangum's unreal ability to sing and sing without ever inhaling. From On Avery Island, the faves are Gardenhead and Song Against Sex. Then In the Aeroplane is a whole album that hangs together.

Whoa! I was at that show at the Knit. Not long before or after, I saw Neutral Milk Hotel play with Of Montreal, which was an off-the-charts awesome double-bill. I think I spent 87% of my disposable income on shows at that time.

Ah, yeah - listening to some of In The Airplane, I've heard this before various places. A friend of mine played this for me once, I think. It's pretty memorable, anyway. I remember thinking there was some really poignant and great stuff in that first song and a half, and then I had no clue what to do with "I love you, Jesus Christ!" Still don't, really, although honestly I've only really heard this twice, so it probably needs more listening.

It's odd, because lately I can't listen to anything involving guitars, (except maybe this, which I listen to obsessively). It's like I'm dead to all forms of rock music. Maybe I'll come back around at some point; I don't know. All I can listen to anymore is techno, house, and old-style jazz. Which is weird for me, because I'd really liked rock music for as long as I can remember.

Anyway, I'll hold on to this in my mind, and give it a try again later. Thanks for the recommendations, everybody.

I just had to Google and holy mother of god how the fuck did I miss that show? HULK MAD.

I always took the "Jesus Christ" as an exclamation rather than a love object.

...and then I had no clue what to do with "I love you, Jesus Christ!"

If I wasn't in a "oh well I'll just let it play" mood at a bus stop the first time I heard Aeroplane I probably would have cut out at that moment as well. It's one of those moments akin to a band throwing in a track of pure noise right around track 2 or 3: either you "get" it (I honestly have no idea what to make of the Jesus Christ stuff either and I've heard the album more times than I can count) or you just let it be and keep going.

He writes about the Jesus Christ thing in the liner notes. In what I remember as rambling incoherence, he explains that he didn't actually mean Jesus Christ as Jesus Christ but rather as some light that emanates from all of us and connects us or something like that. I also remember him being self-deprecating about it.

From the 5/6/10 Show at the Christ Knox Benefit at Le Poisson Rouge in NYC
Oh Comely
A Baby For Pree
Where You'll Find Me
Two-Headed Boy Pt. 2
In The Aeroplane Over The Sea

Apparently he played "Engine" as an encore but I can't find it anywhere.

Apparently he played "Engine" as an encore but I can't find it anywhere.

Completely paraphrasing:

Mangum: Do you guys know Engine?

Everyone: YES.

Mangum: I'm gonna play that. Feel free to sing along.

Up until this point, people were somewhat hesitant to sing along. The first couple songs were played to a mostly silent, reverent room.

I saw the show at the Middle East upstairs the day after this NYC show (assuming this list of shows is correct). Before the show Jeff Magnum bummed a cigarette off a friend I was with, though we didn't realize who he was until he went on stage. It was thoroughly awesome.

My five-year-old has started to ask a lot of questions about what happens after we die. Now I've got a tight, honest answer for her. One more thing, then, to thank Jeff Mangum for, from the bottom of my heart, if the fucker would just come back and assume his rightful place as the elder statesman of indie singer-songwriting already.

Thanks for the post, and great timing! I just finished Kim Cooper's loving tribute to In The Aeroplane Over The Sea as part of the 33 1/3 series. Whether you've loved your CD down to the foil or don't know much and are curious about the album/band, it's highly recommended.

Most of the 33 1/3 books are great, but this is definitely my favorite thus far by a wide margin.
